Alexandra Lange is an architecture critic who writes the Critical Eye column for Curbed.[1] She also writes for the New Yorker,[2] Architect Magazine,[3] Slate Magazine, and Design Observer.[4] She is based in New York City.

She cites Ada Louise Huxtable as a major influence.[5] She wrote, in reference to Huxtable: "Few practitioners of criticism meant to be critics. Criticism happened to them, through a combination of luck and outrage, at moments in cities when building outstripped sense."[6]

Education

Lange earned a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University in 2005[7], preceded by an M.A. in 2001. She graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Architecture and Literature in 1994.[7]

Career

Lange is a faculty member at SVA in New York, in the Design Research, Writing and Criticism MA program.[8]

Publications

She has published several books and book chapters, plus many dozens of articles. Her latest book, The Design of Childhood: How the Material World Shapes Independent Kids, was published by Bloomsbury USA in June 2018.
