Blair Boyd is an American composer currently based in the UK.[1]

She is completing a PhD in Composition at Cardiff University, writing her first chamber opera The Yellow Wallpaper[2] under the supervision of Dr. Arlene Sierra, [3]. She is also a co-organiser of [https://www.illuminatewomensmusic.co.uk/ Illuminate Women's Music], a new project to promote the work of emerging women composers and performers.[4]

Education

Boyd was born and raised in Tennessee, USA. Her musical education began young, learning piano and singing in a children’s choir from age 5. In high school, she took guitar and voice lessons and played the flute in middle school band. Blair went on to study Theory and Composition at University of Tennessee with Dr Kenneth A. Jacobs, earning a BMus (Summa cum laude)[5], and was a Student Composer Contest Honoree at 34th [https://www.music.org/ College Music Society-Regional Conference], Morrow, GA, USA, with her string quartet I Was Never Good with Words performed by Clayton State String Quartet[6]. In 2013, Boyd moved to UK and studied with Michael Ellison and John Pickard at University of Bristol, where she was awarded a Masters of Arts in Music, Distinction.[7]

Whilst studying for a PhD at Cardiff University, Boyd was selected to participate in several advanced composition programmes: Cheltenham Composers’ Academy with Michael Zev Gordon, Dartington Advanced Composition Course with Judith Weir, MusicFest [https://musicfestaberystwyth.org/ Aberystwyth Advanced Composition Course] with Kenneth Hesketh [https://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/creative-programme/supported-artists/blair-boyd] and HighSCORE Composition Program with tuition from Amy Beth Kirsten, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Dmitri Tymoczko. At HighSCORE, her string quartet Juncture was presented in masterclass with Helmut Lachenmann.[8]

Musical work

Boyd's musical style is highly energized and engages with physical movement and the perception of time[9], drawing upon her years of dance lessons:

"A huge influence on my compositional approach is dance and movement. I spent fifteen years in the dance studio from age 3 learning various styles from ballet, jazz, and contemporary to tap and hip hop.  I even tried tumbling and twirled the baton to the tunes of a marching band in a few parades. These early experiences have naturally fed into the way I approach and think about music.  My work often deals with connecting with physical movement in some way, currently exploring the use of gestures inspired by Laban’s Eight Efforts: float, flick, glide, dab, wring, slash, press, punch, as well as groove perception through the use of long-range polyrhythms." (Boyd, 2018) [10]
Her compositions have been performed by members of the Heath Quartet, Dr. K Sextet, and [https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/music/performance-and-composition/performance/contemporary-music-group Cardiff University’s Contemporary Music Group]. She has worked extensively with Bristol CoMA who performed her piece Tracing Outside the Lines for flexible ensemble at both Bristol University’s Victoria Rooms and Colston Hall in 2014. Shadow Woman, has been recorded for future release, which was premiered by harpist [https://gwenllianllyr.co.uk/ Gwenllian Llyr] and soprano [https://www.sarahdacey.com/ Sarah Dacey] as part of a collaboration with the Coma & Disorders of Consciousness Research Centre at Cardiff University. She was also commissioned by the Girls’ Day School Trust to compose and conduct the finale piece for the [https://www.gdst.net/article/students-compete-gdst-national-music-prize-land-song GDST Young Musician of the Year Competition] in 2018.[https://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/creative-programme/supported-artists/blair-boyd]
