In 1940, Weeks became Alexandra Shire Council's first female councillor.[2] She served as the shire president in 1945.[3][4] Being only the fifth woman to be elected to a local council in Victoria, Weeks began using her preferred given name rather than her initials in official correspondence, in an attempt to stop letters for her being addressed to "Dear Sir".[5] From 1946, Weeks served as president of the United Country Party's women's section.[6] Weeks also became the inaugural president of the Australian Local Government Women's Association when it was formed in 1951.[7] Throughout her career, Weeks became known for her ongoing encouragement to women to become involved in politics, as she believed there was a need to have more female political representatives.[8] Weeks also served in various capacities with a number of other organisations including the Australian Red Cross, the Australian Imperial Force's Women's Association, the Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind.[6] In 1956, Weeks was awarded an Order of the British Empire in acknowledgement of her services as a councillor.[9] She died in 1964 at the age of 79.[10] In 2001, Weeks was posthumously added to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.[11] {{Australia-politician-stub}}References1. ^(17 June 2010) Biography: Ellen Weeks, Australian Women's Register, The National Foundation for Australian Women.
