Ernst Graupner (December 22, 1917 – January 25, 1989) was a German painter and illustrator.

Life

Ernst Graupner was born on December 22, 1917 in Ingolstadt, Germany as the third eldest of six children of the public servant Franz Graupner and the housewife Elsa Graupner née Scharf. He received his first important artistic impulses by his art teacher Wilhelm Krauss at the humanistic Reuchlin school in Ingolstadt. There he met his classmate Knut Schnurer, with whom he maintained an artistic friendship for the rest of his life. From 1939 to 1944 Graupner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the professors Hermann Kaspar and Julius Heß. It was here that he met the Swiss textile artist Annemarie Graupner (granddaughter of the Swiss watercolorist Christian Baumgartner), whom he married in 1953. Starting in 1945 he worked as a freelance artist in Munich. Together with their friend and Munich-based architect Hans Maurer, Hans Maurer the couple built a studio house in the Nymphenburg section of the city in 1953. The following year their son Stefan Graupner was born. Ernst Graupner died in Munich on January 25th,1989.

Work

Graupner left behind an extensive work of drawings, paintings and reverse glass paintings. His style was initially influenced by Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism. His artistic analysis continuously focused on the figurative. In the last twenty years of his life, Graupner increasingly turned to the medium of drawing, which helped him translate the exploration of the unconscious directly into a pictorial language. This became characteristic of his oeuvre. Numerous murals were created in public buildings (bank, kindergarten, post office) and most recently in 1982 in the hospital of Ingolstadt (waiting area of the psychiatric outpatient clinic).
