Food is Free Project is a registered 501c3 non-profit founded by American John VanDeusen Edwards and launched in 2012 in Austin, Texas. Since the first Food is Free Project garden began, the movement has spread to more than 300 cities around the world, from Los Angeles to Australia.[1] Speaking at a TEDx talk hosted by Columbia College Chicago in 2015 VanDeusen Edwards described it as "Planting a Revolution in your front yard" and in his talk discussed the problems of access to clean, chemical-free food that led to the founding of the project. Agents of ChangeThe stated goals of Food is Free Project are to grow food and community[2]. It is described as a movement by HeartThreads whose video featuring a Food is Free Project gardener went viral on the WFAA Facebook page. The movement seems to empower neighbours to grow and share food with each other. Food is Free Project has also installed gardens at schools and in other shared community spaces. Some Food is Free Project gardeners have used the GoFundMe platform to create campaigns and raise funds for the project to grow and assist more people. The movement's participants are agents of change as they create small changes in their local communities. A Story of Food video was created to explain the concept of the Food is Free Project to the uninitiated. How it worksResidents of a community can follow the model of the first Food is Free Project garden by simply planting a garden and offering up their harvest to their neighbours. Detailed guidance is provided on the Food is Free Project website as well as a Google form to formally register intent to create a new Food is Free Project if there is not one already in a community for guidance and advice from other participants. NoveltyParallel movements exist around the globe. In the UK and Africa, Incredible Edible Todmorden (Founded in 2008) and Incredible Edible Kinshasa are sister movements on different continents (with others sharing this name in Israel, Palestine, Colombia and Brazil) with the goal of feeding the community through gardening[3]. In France, the initiative is called Les Incroyables Comestibles[3]. The Buy Nothing Project encourages community building in a similar way without the focus on food.
