Foodnome is an internet service that facilitates meals at “home restaurants” by allowing people to search for home-hosted dinners in their area, and by connecting independent chefs to resources and diners. The company was founded in Davis, CA, an area well-known for agriculture and agricultural research in connection with the University of California, Davis. California Retail Food CodeIn March of 2018 Foodnome was served a Cease and Desist order from Yolo County for violating retail food codes requiring that meals be prepared in industrial kitchens[1][2]. Foodnome organized with the C.O.O.K. Alliance to advocate for California Assembly Bill 626[3], legalizing the sale of home cooked meals. According to both organizations, the high cost of renting or purchasing an industrial kitchen create an impossibly high barrier to entry for cooks from disadvantaged communities[4]. Former California Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill into law on September 8, 2018 with permits effective starting January 2019. Under the new law, individual cooks can apply for Microenterprise Home Kitchen permits to legally sell small-scale meals cooked at home, up to $50,000 per year[5].
