The character was introduced in the third episode of the series. Fictional historyBackgroundBefore commanding the USS Discovery Lorca was the commanding officer of the USS Buran. About a month after the beginning of the 2256 Federation-Klingon war the ship was ambushed and boarded by Klingons. Lorca set the ship to self destruct, so that it's crew doesn't fall into Klingon hands and face degradation, torture and slow public death, then abandoned ship, becoming the only survivor and injuring his eyes which became extremely sensitive to strong lights.[2] Later that year he became the captain of Discovery, a brand new science ship turned warship. Lorca kept a room aboard the Discovery with various weapons and creatures, including the skeleton of a Gorn, to better fight the war.[3][4][5] Season 1In 2256, sometime after he became the captain of Discovery his ship rescued the shuttle SPT 21, which was carrying Michael Burnham. By then, Lorca, science officer Paul Stamets and the Discovery crew had been attempting to figure out a way to develop a spore drive that could transport the ship anywhere quicker than warp drive. Later, Lorca offered Burnham a position aboard the Discovery, which she accepted. Lorca later met with Ellen Landry, the chief of security aboard the Discovery, where she informed him that a violent creature that Burnham and other crew members had encountered aboard the USS Glenn had been beamed aboard the Discovery.[3] Soon after the creature was beamed aboard, Lorca, who had become frustrated after running battle scenarios with the bridge crew of the Discovery, showed the creature to Burnham and asked her to find a way to weaponize it. Burnham discovered that the creature was only violent in defense of itself and resembled the tardigrade species. After receiving a distress signal from Corvan II, Lorca attempted to hurry Stamets in getting the spore drive to its full potential. Burnham and Stamets soon learned that the tardigrade creature was essential to the spore drive's success, acting as a navigator. Using the creature, the Discovery set a course for Corvan II, where it destroyed multiple Klingon ships and saved the mining colony.[6] DevelopmentStar Trek: Discovery was announced on November 2, 2015.[7] On March 7, 2017, it was announced that Jason Isaacs had joined the cast as Gabriel Lorca.[8] After being cast, Isaacs asked the filmmakers of the series where Lorca's story would end up and where he had come from. Isaacs has also defined Lorca as not a hero, or villain, but as a person who is trying to defeat the Klingons in his own way. Isaacs has also portrayed Lorca in a way that implies more of a backstory between characters than shown and has hopes that the series will lead to discussions about the stories of the series.[9]See also
