Gail Iles (born 10 November 1974) is a British physicist, veteran of five parabolic flight campaigns and joint winner of the 2011 WISE Champion Award. She is a lecturer in physics at RMIT University[1]. She is a member of The Australian Institute of Physics and serves on the Victorian Branch of their Committee. She was awarded the title of Chartered Physicist by the Institute of Physics in 2014. {{AFC submission|t||ts=20181027085247|u=Gail Iles|ns=118|demo=}}Early Life and EducationIles was born on 10 November 1974 in Stockport, England. Iles dreamt of being an astronaut from an early age[2]. She studied a Bachelors degree in Science with the Open University over a period of eight years. During this time Iles worked part-time and studied additional courses in the evenings. Iles was awarded a Certificate in Management in 2001 and a Teacher's Certificate in 2002, graduating with an upper second class BSc in December 2003. The Honours classification fulfilled the conditions of award of a grant by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council thus enabling Iles to study a PhD in condensed matter physics at the University of Leicester[3]. Iles completed the post-doctoral degree in August 2007, but missed the deadline to submit the paperwork to attend the graduation ceremony due to being in France participating in her first parabolic flight campaign. CareerIles worked throughout her undergraduate studies whilst bringing up her two sons. She worked as a switch operator in the Royal Signals as a volunteer at the now disbanded 35 Signal Regiment. In 1999 several members of this volunteer unit were stationed in Bosnia during the . Iles was forced to withdraw from active service in order to attend court hearings in the family courts. Iles also worked as a lecturer at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College teaching mathematics and information technology to school-leavers and adults. Once at Leicester, Iles was employed by the university as a sessional academic teaching physics undergraduates. In 2007 Iles was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the European Space Agency to perform advanced materials characterisation on Ni and Ti aluminde intermetallics under the IMPRESS project[4]. The position was based in Grenoble where Iles was stationed jointly at the Institut Laue-Langevin and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Iles joined the parabolic flight team from IFAM, Bremen and participated in four campaigns[5][6][7][8] operating a Ni nanoparticle agglomeration device. In 2008 the European Space Agency opened a call for European Astronaut Candidates. Iles applied and passed several stages of the process[9]. Concurrently, Iles applied to become a Crew Instructor and took up this post when the IMPRESS project ended in 2009. Stationed at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne[10], Iles trained several International Space Station crew members on Columbus systems and hardware. Iles also trained a number of Columbus Ground Support Personnel. Due to extensive experience in and tolerance of microgravity, Iles was selected as an instructor on the 52nd ESA parabolic flight campaign - the maiden voyage of the six newly selected ESA astronauts[11]. Iles was approached by the theatre company, Unlimited Theatre whose director, Jon Spooner, had said he 'googled British Astronaut and your name came up'. This was likely due to the large amount of press in the UK following the ESA astronaut recruitment campaign. Iles worked with Unlimited Theatre on a number of projects[12][13], the largest being 'Mission to Mars' a play for 5-12 year old children about the 9-month journey to the planet Mars[14][15]. The play was a success in London and Yorkshire winning a number of awards[16], including the WISE Champion Award in 2011. Iles attended the awards ceremony in London and was presented the trophy by HRH the Princess Royal. In 2011, Iles was offered the opportunity to return to science with a job offer from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Iles accepted the offer and spent three years designing and constructing FALCON, a neutron Laue diffractometer[17], a project that was hindered by news that the reactor would be closed for good at the end of 2019[18]. The experience served as the foundation for work in Australia when the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation sponsored her visa to work on finalising construction of the backscattering spectrometer, EMU[19]. In 2016 Iles presented a seminar for the Royal Aeronautical Society, Australian Chapter in Sydney about her work as an astronaut instructor and extensive experience in zero gravity[20]. Offering to be a referee, Brian Greaves strongly encouraged Iles to apply to become a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and her second sponsor was Major Tim Peake. Her application was rejected on the grounds that she had not made 'a significant contribution to aerospace'. Awards and Recognition
Outreach and MediaIles has been active in promoting STEM to children and adults for over ten years[22][23][24]. She is an advocate for women in STEM[25], although no longer describes herself as a feminist due to negative associations with the word in modern media. She appears regularly on radio and is currently a Science Correspondent on 3AW on the Neil Mitchell show[26]. She also makes annual appearances on the public stage at Scienceworks[27] promoting science and space[28] to the public[29]. Iles is a guest speaker for the Girls in Physics Breakfasts[30] organised by the Australian Institute of Physics and the Victoria Physics Teacher's Network[31]. Iles is a supporter of the Opaque Space virtual reality game Earthlight Spacewalk, stating how the high fidelity artwork and game aspects make the experience an excellent astronaut training tool.[32] Selected Publications
Personal LifeIn her spare time, Iles is an avid gamer[33] and streams regularly on Twitch under the pseudonym 'Lady Top Hat'[34]. She is married and has two sons from a previous relationship.
