Grind & Co Ltd, trading as Grind, is a British café and restaurant chain offering a casual dining environment with a focus on coffee, cocktails, and all-day dining. The chain was founded in Shoreditch in 2011 by David Abrahamovitch, who is the CEO. The company operates cafe's, restaurants and cocktail bars as well as a coffee roastery and a recording studio.[1] The company is headquartered in Shoreditch and employs over 200 people.

History

The chain was founded in London in 2011 by David Abrahamovitch, when he inherited his father's mobile phone business and decided to turn it into a coffee shop.[2] David enlisted Kaz James, an Australian DJ to help with the project, and Kaz added a recording studio upstairs. After investment from John Ayton MBE,[3] and two rounds of crowdfunding,[4] the business has grown to incorporate eleven locations and a coffee roastery in Shoreditch.[5]

Locations

The chain is based in London, and as of July 2018 operates 11 locations; in Shoreditch, Soho, London Bridge, Clerkenwell, Exmouth Market, Royal Exchange, Covent Garden and Greenwich; in Whitechapel and Hatton Garden through a partnership with Derwent London; and in the Facebook offices in Euston Square.[6]

Products

Grind roasts its own coffee, and is also well known for its Espresso Martini's, which are often referenced in the media. [7] [8]

Franchise

In November 2017 the company signed an agreement with SSP to open franchised locations in airports and train stations in the UK and Europe.[9] [10]

In June 2018 it was announced that the first franchise location would be London Bridge Station.[11]

Fundraising

The company has raised funds twice via crowdfunding. In 2015 it raised £1.3m from 471 Investors with Crowdcube under the 'Grind Bond'[10]. In 2017 it offered shares in the company to the crowd, again with Crowdcube, closing the raise six days after opening to the public having reached it's £2m funding cap. This funding round valued the business at £20.1m.[12]

Instagram

The company was included in a BBC article about 'Instagrammable' brands[13] and focuses heavily on it's use of the social media platform, where it has over 110,000 followers as of July 2018.[14]

Awards & Recognitions

In 2017 the company won the Restaurant and Bar Design Award for best Standalone Restaurant design for it's location in Clerkenwell.[15]. The same year it also won a Gold award at the Melbourne Design Awards for the same location. [16].

In 2017 Grind was runner up 'Coffee Shop of the Year' at the London Lifestyle Awards.[17].

Grind has twice been a finalist as best emerging concept at the Retailers Retailer of the Year Awards.[18]

In 2018 Grind was shortlisted as a 'Breakthrough Brand' at the CGA Peach Hero & Icon Awards [19]

In November 2018 Grind was enrolled onto the Elite Program with the London Stock Exchange [https://www.elite-network.com/private-companies/our-companies/grind-amp-co-ltd#]

In December 2018 Grind was also shortlisted in the 'Ones to Watch' Sunday Times Fast Track 100
