The Hugh Miller Institute was built as a public library and meeting room to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Hugh Miller in the town of Cromarty.[1]

History

The plans for the building were drawn up in 1902 by the architect Alexander Ross from the practice Ross and Macbeth based in Inverness. The foundation stone was laid on ..... by .... and Andrew Carnegie formally opened the building on 28 August 1904.

The institute was named after Hugh Miller who was a folklorist, man of faith, stonemason, geologist, editor, writer and social justice campaigner. He was born in Cromarty on 10 October 1802 and died 23 December 1856 aged 54.

Library today

Cromarty Library is still open as a library and provides a full range of resources and service with a friendly welcome to both the local community and visitors to the area.
