Intervene (2016)

Intervene is a surreal, hypnogogic parable about an unstable young man whose family feeds his madness by staging religious visions.^[1]

Plot Summary

The short opens with dissonant singing over the opening credits. This transitions to James (Noel David Taylor) coughing as he stumbles out of his slumber, and the music is replaced by the static of a tv. He stares forward while sitting up, and eventually walks towards a bottle. He takes a swig, and immediately vomits. The camera cuts to James breathing in vapors from a box, and then feels around his body. As his hand gets to his neck, he begins choking himself. A pink glimmer then refracts onto his face, which he crawls towards in a feral fashion.

The film cuts to three women of varying ages surrounding a table. The middle of them (Justine, played by Kate Lyn Sheil) expresses her disinterest in silence. The eldest, Gwendolyn (Jane Adams), brings up that she has bought vases for James, which the others mention he doesn't even use. They discuss the visions James has been seeing, and how they manipulate him into holding beliefs pertaining to these apparent visions. Justine claims the family is religious, to which Gwendolyn refutes saying they are a family of faith. The youngest, J.R. (Emily Robinson), says that James believes in everything he's been shown, but that the pink isn't enough. This reveals that they create the light that shined onto his face, and thus the belief system James holds. J.R. claims that James needs a conclusion. Something bigger. Justine then states "He can have it all."

James starts drawing a cube in his room, only for the pink light to shine into his room again. He walks outside, first drawing a square in the gravel, then digging into it, and ultimately punching it until he bleeds. J.R. converses with him, asking him about about the voice of the entity he believes in, and what he sees. He describes “a space cut into ours, just a simple bright square of something else, and it cuts through. it’s there, in front of me but its covered -shrouded- so i can’t see. The form is there, but covered.” J.R. asks if he talks to it, and he responds "when you see all these things, you know it is near. Right at your door." She asks what he needs, and that is only to touch it, with no desire to be seen by it.

Justine is shown knitting a pink veil at the table. James is shown to be sitting in his room, surrounded by dead flowers, a static tv, and a figurine of a missionary next to various cubes. Then, pink fog billows into the room. He looks behind him, to see a person, wearing pink clothing and veil (presumably Justine with a voice changer). This is the entity James holds faith in. He is told "It's just a feeling. There's no answer for a feeling." Dissatisfied, James clings on to Justine, which causes her voice changer to crackle. She then pushes him to a floor covered in pink rocks, covering his mouth.

Cut to Justine knitting the pink veil, it becomes even more clear that the women of his family are manipulating him into a docile, dependent creature.
