James Anderson Irons (February 21, 1857- 20 July, 1921) was Brigadier General in the United States Army during World War I. Irons participated in the Indian Wars, the Spanish–American War, the Philippine–American War, and World War I. He took part in the Imperial Japanese War Mission. Iron was Inspector General of the Department of Colorado and commanded the 166th Depot Brigade as Brigadier General.[1]

Early life

James Anderson Irons was born on Feburbary 21, 1857 to James R. Irons and Sarah Anderson Irons. In 1875, Irons attended USMA and graduated number fory-nine of sixty-seven in the class of 1879.[1]

Military career

After graduating from USMA, Irons was assigned to the 20th Infantry. He peformed frontier duty while stationed at Fort Brown, Texas from 1879 to 1883.[1] In 1867, he returned to frontier duties after graduating from the Infantry and Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During the Spanish American War, Iron was at El Caney, San Juan Hill, and the Siege of Santiago. From 1899 to 1901, Iron was stationed in the Philippines. From 1901 to 1903, he was Inspector General of the Department of Colorado and served on the General Staff.[1]

During World War 1, Iron was an observer and military attache to the Japanese Army War Mission under Viscount Ishii Kikujirō. On August 15, 1917, Iron was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned to command the 166th Deport Brigade at Camp Lewis. From February to March of 1918, he commnaded the Third Infantry Divison.

Later Life

Iron retired as Colonel in 1920. He died in Sant Agnello di Sorrento, Italy on July 20, 1921.[1]

Personal Life

On June 7, 1888, James Anderson Iron married Florence Farrell.[1]
