Margaret "Maggie" Poisal, later Maggie Poisal Fitzpatrick, was an Arapaho woman recognized for her interpretation between the Arapaho peoples and settlers in Boulder Valley.[1] Originally named MaHom (Snake Woman) she was the sister of Arapaho Chief Niwot. [2] Early lifePoisal was sent to school in St. Louis, Missouri by her father and it is there she developed her skills as a translator. [1] Poisal's husband served as one of the Indian Agents at the Fort Laramrie Council. It is believed Poisal also in attendance and Poisal served as an interpreter.[3] The for the Fort Laramie Council led to the development of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851. [4] In 1865, Poisal served as the interpreter for the Arapaho leaders and the Federal Commissioners, including General W.S. Harney, Colonel Kit Carson, William Bent, Agent Leavenworth, and Judge James Steel, at a meeting that resulted in a truce between the Native peoples and settlers following the Sand Creek Massacre.[5][6] |
