Nancy Douyon is an American human factors engineer and worldwide speaker on the subject of user experience design.[1] She has been featured in a number of technical conferences.

Biography

Early life and education

Douyon was born in Boston, MA to a poor farming family from Haiti. She first became interested in tech at 12 years old[2] and joined The Computer Clubhouse in her community where she learned how to code. Through a series of unfortunate events, she ended up in foster care at the age of 14, but still stayed involved with the Clubhouse and other tech activities including being a tech coordinator, instructor, and risk auditor at local YWCAs, museums, and Harvard University. [3]

Douyon graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master's of Science in Information, specializing in human computer interaction.[4] She attended Suffolk University for her undergraduate studies where she was awarded an Educational Institutional Partnership Scholarship.[5]

Technical career

Douyon has led International Research at Uber[6] where she researches end-to-end experience of critical launches around the world.[7] Previously, she worked Google where she received a Platinum Award, an award for Googlers who have a strategic and lasting impact on the organization, for her work as user experience research program lead.[8][9] Prior to Uber and Google, held positions at IBM's Interactive Research, Accenture Experience, and Intel's Mobility Group.[10]

Douyon has given talks about diversity and inclusion at Google,[11] Uber,[12] and Adobe[13] and speaks frequently at tech conferences around the world about race and algorithmic bias in UX/UI design.[14]

White House

Douyon had the honor of speaking at the White House Celebration of Caribbean Heritage Month during the Obama Administration. Douyon was chosen by the Embassy of Haiti as a young Haitian-American and Caribbean-American Millennial leader who has shown scalable social impact in technology in both the United States and Caribbean nations.[15]

Adobe

Now more than ever, there is a focus on Experience Design (XD). Users are evaluating not just the product of the service, but also the experience itself. Designers must develop new strategies, plus account for an ever-increasing influx of new devices and interfaces. Douyon, when she was User Experience Researcher at Google was invited to Adobe to discuss her inspiration in XD and gives insight into how to turn the brightest ideas in the the greatest work across desktops and mobile devices.[16]

Broadcom

At twelve-years-old, Douyon joined an after school computer skills program where she first learned to code. Despite the cultural norms and barriers she faced as a Haitian-American, she went on to college for her Bachelor's degree and then her Master's degree in Human Computing Interaction. Fast forward to a few years later, she was developing software for kidney dialysis machines and designing wearable technology. While at Google, Douyon simultaneously worked towards her PhD in Human Factors Engineering.

Enterprise UX 2018

Rosenfield Media brings together SCALE discussion panel at the conference Enterprise UX 2018. Douyon joined other tech professionals John Taschek, Jennifer Cardello, and Tricia Wang discuss scale design within an enterprise organization.

Uber Tech Day

Uber's Global Scalable Research program provides insights that empowers teams to design and test new products and features that improve user experiences in markets across the world. In this talk, UX researcher Douyon discusses how Uber's Global Research team determines which products to prioritize in regional markets, as well as better understand if their designs translate well to non-U.S. users.[17]

"What Can You Do As An Ally?" Tech Inclusion SF 2015

Douyon moderates a panel with other tech professionals Parker Thompson, Kaustav Mitra, and Dan Loeb to discuss the fears, challenges, and rewards of standing up, and even standing down, for diverse people in tech.[18]

Programming and Prejudice: Can Computers Be Racist? Talk at Google

Douyon joins Van Jones, Bradley Horowitz, and Anil Dash explore the unintentional identity abrasions users experience when accessing products, the roles and responsibilities of tech companies in addressing racial and gender bias in their products, and the critical role of cross-racial solidarity necessary to break down barriers. Google's Decoding Race series was intended to inform and empower Googlers to have open and constructive conversations on race and its intersections.[19]

Psychology and UX: Understanding how people think and feel makes better products

Douyon brought global user experience expertise to UX Craft South Africa. Her session shows the audience their own 'vulnerabilities' of their brain and how people can use those in designing user interfaces.[20]

Black Women in Tech: Nancy Douyon

Blavity, follows up with Douyon and Black women in tech, delving into the unique experiences of six inspiring women professionals who range in age, background, career, and workplace. Throughout the series, they give tips on navigating the tech industry and share their personal stories. Despite differences, each of their stories has one commonality, they are all Black women working in Silicon Valley where they are a part of a scarce minority.[21]

Douyon was been named "40 Under 40: Tech Diversity" in Silicon Valley[22] by theREGISTRY Bay Area in 2015. She was also picked as one of thirteen brilliant women innovators and subject matter experts corporations should keep their eye on in Huffington Post.[23]
