Dr. Nora Khaldi is a mathematician{{dubious}} with a PhD in molecular evolution and bioinformatics ^[1] from Trinity College Dublin, she is also the founder and CSO at Nuritas.

Early Life and Education

Khaldi was born in Algeria to an Irish mother and a French father^[2]. Her parents had showed her science documentaries from a young age which ignited the desire to be a scientist, and that’s exactly what she became. Even when all her schoolmates wanted to be superheroes, Khaldi wanted to be a scientist ^[3].

Khaldi obtained a degree in mathematics from the Université Aix-Marseille and then went on to receive a PhD in bioinformatics and molecular evolution from Trinity College Dublin with research focused primarily on protein evolution and comparative genomics^[4]. This was followed by a research fellowship in University College Dublin.

Research

Khaldi has led international research teams around the world, in both academic and industrial settings, and was the first scientist to show gene transfer between multi-cellular species, which had occurred naturally millions of years ago. She was also the first to show that fungal species could exchange chemicals to out compete other species^[5]. Some of her publications received high access rating, and were placed in a library of the top 2% of published articles in biology and medicine ^[6].

Nuritas

Khaldi left her role in UCD in early 2014 to found Nuritas with the aim of using powerful computer technology to mine existing food products for beneficial components^[7]. By using a combination of artificial intelligence and DNA analysis Nuritas discovers new disease-beating functional ingredients in food that have various therapeutic qualities, including the management of chronic metabolic syndromes. Nuritas became the first Irish biotech company backed by the European Investment Bank when it made a €30 million loan to the Dublin-based entity ^[8].

The company has also received backing from investors including New Protein Capital, early Facebook and Dropbox investors Ali Partovi and U2’s Bono and The Edge, as well as Salesforce CEO, Marc Benioff ^[9].

Awards and Achievements

Dr. Khaldi received the ‘Woman of the Decade in Business and Leadership’ award at the Women Economic Forum in 2017 ^[10]. She was named as one of Women’s Executive Network (WXN) 2018 Ireland’s Most Powerful Women ^[11].
