Paul Couvrette (born June 22, 1951) is a Canadian portrait photographer based in Ottawa, Ontario.

Early life and career

Couvrette earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Carleton University in 1974.[1] He was the photography editor of The Charlatan, the University's newspaper. After graduation, he traveled in Europe and worked at the camera shop Wallace Heaton in London.[2] Upon returning to Ottawa in 1975, Couvrette worked as a photographer shooting portraits, commercial photography and weddings.[3]

Work

Couvrette’s work has appeared in magazines such as Time,[1] Macleans[4] and Ottawa Life.[5]   He has created portraits for  Antonio Lamer[6] and Barbara McLachlin[3], Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, Cognos founder Michael Potter[3], author and head of the National Library Roch Carrier,[7] Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire,[8] former US Ambassadors Bruce Heyman,[9] and author John Ralston Saul.[10] Couvrette`s work with notable Canadian socialite Marilyn Cowpland was featured in a number of publications including the cover of Macleans.[4]  In 1994 he was commissioned by the Public Archives to create a portrait that showed every Canadian Prime Minister since Pierre Trudeau, which is now held permanently in their collection.[11]

Couvrette's editorial clients include Time, whose Canadian edition used his photograph of Maher Arar (as "Canadian Newsmaker of the Year") for its cover, as well as his photograph of Belinda Stronach.[12] Couvrette was a friend to actress Shannon Tweed, having helped her launch her career through his portraits of her in the 1970s.[13] Couvrette has lectured throughout North America for professional Associations such as the Professional Photographers of Canada. His expertise was recognized early in his career by Kodak who featured him in the Kodak Lecture Series at Ryerson in 1979.[14]

Couvrette was a pioneer in digital imaging and one of the first professional photographers to utilize the technology in Ottawa. After buying a film scanner in 1991, Couvrette embraced digital technology and in 1996 became the Canadian spokesperson for Agfa , travelling across Canada to provide instruction to aspiring photographers. [15] In 1993 he was an advisor to both Adobe and Corel, in the early days of Photoshop and Corel Photo-Paint. [16]

In 2003 Couvrette's work was featured in 'The Bigger Picture' one of the Ottawa Art Gallery's largest exhibits.[17]

In 2008 Couvrette worked with Member of Parliament Paul Dewar to create a portrait of supporters of establishing the Canadian National Portrait Gallery in Ottawa, which he would then donate to the National Gallery. The Canadian Artist's Representation described Couvrette as 'world-renowned' in an article showing their support of the portrait.[18]

In 2011 Couvrette became the center of a controversy in which Mayor Watson of Ottawa called his services as City of Ottawa portraitist "a frivolous expense". Photographers across North America rallied to his cause and the local media supported Couvrette by uncovering the fact that most of the fees were due to failures by the City and Councillors regarding responsibility for the costs.[19] Couvrette has launched a number of actions regarding the theft of his work, both online and in print.[20]

One publicized case involved the theft of the image of 24 Sussex for which he launched a $25,000 lawsuit against Boom Radio/ Corus Entertainment. [21]

In 2017 Couvrette developed a project for Canada's 150th Anniversary which detailed his family's pioneer connections to Ottawa, and featured a First Nation's dancer in Muskrat Magazine. [22]

In 2018, His portrait of Kenojuak Ashevak was chosen to be on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario to feature the Inuit artist in the Tunirrusiangit exhibit. [23]

The Karsh brothers

Couvrette was a friend and colleague of Malak and Yousuf Karsh, and cites Yousuf Karsh as a primary influence on his portrait photography. Both photographers referred him clients upon retirement, and Malak Karsh passed on the legacy of creating imagery for Canadian currency, with photos by Couvrette appearing on Canada's previous ten dollar bill. In December 2008, the Ottawa Citizen chose Couvrette as one of three photographers to make self-portraits in Karsh's style and to discuss the influence of Karsh on their work.[24][3]

Awards

Paul Couvrette is accredited as Master Photographer by the Professional Photographers of Canada, which in 1994 named him as one of three Canadian Photographers of the Year (Commercial Award)[25] Couvrette was awarded Ontario Photographer of the Year by the Professional Photographers of Ontario for three consecutive years, and was awarded Photographer of the Year utilizing solely digitally created images in 1999.[1]
