Pixomatic was developed by an Armenian startup company named Qube LLC^[2]. It was originally launched as a smart cutout and background removal tool on the App Store in March 2016. Several months later, on October 2016, the Android version of the app was released.^[3]

In May 2017, a new iOS version of the app titled Pixomatic 3 was launched which included an automatic hair selection tool.^[4]^[5]. The same year, under the European Union’s EU4Business initiative, Pixomatic received an EU-SMEDA Innovation Matching Grant(IMG).^[6]

A new, freemium version of the app, called Pixomatic PRO Photo Editor was launched for iOS in January 2018. It includes essential tools for photo retouching such as the Patch and Heal tools for object and blemish removal. In December 2018, the company introduced the web version of the app, allowing users to create edits across different devices.

Features

Initially developed for image cutting and background removal purposes, Pixomatic has developed into a full-fledged photo editing platform. Pixomatic users can cut their pictures, make adjustments and use photo filters. The Pro version of the app includes photo retouching features, such as dedicated Face tools’ category, Heal, Patch, and Clone Stamp tools.

Pixomatic positions itself as an instrument both for casual photo editing and e-Commerce.

Pixomatic & Coldwar Steve

In 2018 a darkly comic Twitter profile called Coldwar Steve emerged gaining popularity through absurdist photomontages featuring surreal versions of Brexit Britain. The author of the account, Christopher Spencer, started creating the collages after his attempted suicide. Spencer revealed that the montages were made using Pixomatic app on his phone during his bus journeys to work and that he would spend all his time on his phone, composing a new piece.^[7]
