Serm Teck Choon is Malaysia Country Head[5] at CtrlShift, a global audience solutions company, where he oversees CtrlShift Malaysia's operation, leads product initiatives and drives strategic partnership regionally. Serm is also the president of Malaysian Digital Association (MDA). EducationSerm Teck Choon holds a bachelor degree of Journalism & Mass Communication in Advertising from The University of Georgia. He also completed his Master of Science in Information Technology from The University of Nottingham. CareerPrior to joining CtrlShift, Serm was Digital Products Head leading the digital product development, management and marketing for Star Media Group Berhad. With 17 years of experience with the media group, he played a key role in driving The Star Online to become the leading news portal in Malaysia, and won few key awards[6][7] in the region. Serm started his career in Web development and served as Technology Manager for The Star Online till 2009. In 2010, Serm was tasked to setup a MSC-status subsidiary for The Star by launching myStarjob.com as a cross-media recruitment solution[8] and successfully made it to be one of the top 3 job boards in Malaysia (comScore Sep 2014)[9]. Serm is passionate about technology and helping media organizations effectively monetize assets in a fragmented digital world. In August 2017, he and his team at CtrlShift launched the region’s first independent private marketplace, AMP (Asia’s By-Invitation Marketplace for Premium Inventory) that aggregates leading publishers across Asia and offers brands access to premium audiences[10]. Serm also played a key role in commercializing CtrlShift’s propriety media management and buying platform, The Hub[11]. Industry InitiativesAs one of the founding members of MDA, Serm is actively involved in industry initiatives. Being an advocate of Malaysia’s digital ecosystem, Serm launched the Malaysian audience measurement currency in 2010 while he served as Audit & Research head at MDA[12]. He also sat on the board of Audit Bureau of Circulations Malaysia (ABC Malaysia). His ePaper auditing framework was incorporated in 2013 ABC Audit Guideline which pushed print media to aggressively launch their digital editions. Serm was appointed by MDA as advisor to ABC Malaysia in Sep 2015, and was elected as President of MDA in Mar 2016[13] and Apr 2018 respectively[14]. Working with MDA council members, he also drives activities such as quarterly networking event Digital Wednesday, training programme MDA School[15], and re-launched industry awards, MDA d Awards[16] Serm is regularly invited by Malaysia's TV/radio stations (8TV, NTV7, TV3, TV2, CityPlus FM, 988, Ai FM, MY), local and regional print and online media to comment on the latest digital trends and developments.
