释义 |
S.J.Rood was a diamond merchant and jewellery manufacturer based at 52-53 Burlington Arcade, London from 1873 until 1998[1]. They were purchased by Hancocks & Co in 1998 at which point Hancocks took-over the S.J.Rood business and premises. HistorySimon J. Rood was a frequent visitor to South Africa and hence from 1860's onwards he became an active diamond merchant, working between Kimberley and London. In 1873, he established a retail jewellery business at premises in Burlington Arcade, London from where his family business manufactured fine jewellery, repaired watches & clocks[2] and sold jewellery, watches, clocks and antiques[3]. In 1911 the business was taken over by the Allen family[4] who focused exclusively on the manufacture and sale of premium fine jewellery to London's aristocracy. In 1912, they were awarded the Royal Warrant by Queen Mary (wife of King George V) and they sold many pieces to her until her death in 1952. Most famous of these are the "For..." series of rings[5] which were personally commissioned by Queen Mary and given to her ladies-in-waiting when they became engaged to be married. From the 1960's onwards, the business began to suffer in line with the UK-economy and it was eventually sold to Hancocks & Co for £8,000,000 in 1998[6]. Hancocks continue to trade from the former S.J.Rood premises in Burlington Arcade. The "For..." Series of RingsQueen Mary was both a prodigious collector of fine jewellery and a generous benefactor to her friends, family and staff. From 1918 until 1949 she gave a bespoke S.J.Rood ring to each of her ladies-in-waiting on the occasion of their engagement. As these rings were all engraved with an identical message "For {the lady-in-waitings first name}" (e.g. "For Mary" or "For Elizabeth") they became known as the "For..." series of rings. Twelve rings are known to exist[7] - "For Mary" from 1918, "For Elizabeth" from 1921, "For Anna" from 1923, "For Constantine" from 1926, "For Jana" from 1927, "For Karin" from 1929, "For Renate" from 1931, "For Ursula" from 1932, "For Patricia" from 1935, "For Barbara" from 1938, "For Carol" from 1946, "For Margaret" from 1949. SInce 2014, four of these rings have now appeared at public auction, commanding prices between $19,000 to $137,000. However, their bespoke design, uniquely engraved messages and small sizes (all are UK sizes K,L and M) have restricted prices below the auction houses' estimates. |
