Dr. Susan (Sue) J. Lamont (born 1953) is a [https://www.ans.iastate.edu/about/history/people/charles-f-curtiss Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor] of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the [https://www.ans.iastate.edu/ Department of Animal Science] at Iowa State University (ISU), USA. Dr. Lamont graduated with a B.S degree from Trinity Christian College (1975) and a Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois Medical Center (1980). At ISU, Dr. Lamont specialized in research in poultry genetics and teaching graduate level classes. Dr. Lamont is a distinguished professor and researcher in genetics and won multiple awards during her career in both academic and professional organization service areas.

Early Life

The father of Dr. Lamont was born in Canada to a pioneer homesteading family who emigrated there from the Netherlands. The family later settled in a small town in Northern Illinois near the suburbs of Chicago. Although neither parent received much formal education, Dr. Lamont’s father worked hard with what knowledge he did have and became a construction contractor. Her mother acted as a phone receptionist for her husband’s business, while raising three children. Dr. Lamont is the youngest of her siblings.

Growing up, Dr. Lamont spent Saturdays checking construction sites with her father and learned the value of hard work from a young age. Her favorite pastimes include spending the majority of her time outside. With her passion for animals, she would catch small animals and bring them home for a short time. Dr. Lamont enjoyed observing the animals and the behaviors that they exhibited. Her parents knew that pursuing a higher education was important and would benefit their children in many ways, but also stressed that their children were considered adults and financially self-supporting after completing high school.

Education

Dr. Lamont received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois in 1975. During her undergraduate education, her first research position was at Argonne Laboratories in Chicago where she worked with electron microscopy for an entire summer. Another summer, she had the chance to work as an undergraduate research assistant examining the hormone differences between landlocked and ocean salmon species in Lake Michigan. These undergraduate research experiences were a major factor that led to Dr. Lamont eventually being interested and pursuing research as a career. As a senior, she was a teaching assistant for an organic chemistry course where she was the instructor and taught the entire class. These jobs particularly helped Dr. Lamont decide her interest in research and teaching as a career.

She then pursued her Doctor of Philosophy in Anatomy and Immunology from the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, graduating in 1980. Once Dr. Lamont entered her graduate studies, she became extremely interested in and excited about the abilities of the poultry, mainly chicken, industry. She did basic science research on immune systems of chickens. For her research she made observations on how different categories of immune systems work separately and together in chickens.

Career

Dr. Lamont chose to pursue an education in these areas because she had been interested in animals and health from a young age. Dr. Lamont found interests in other scientific fields such as biology and chemistry that furthered her passion and pushed her to pursue a career in research. Each of the programs Dr. Lamont was involved in during her education related to these interests in health, specifically the immune system. Using this this training, Dr. Lamont was interested in further research in poultry health and genetics and how we can use birds as a model for human diseases, and then joined University of Massachusetts for her postdoctorate training with Dr. J Robert Smyth Jr.

Dr. Lamont joined ISU in 1983 as Assistant Professor, following the steps of Dr. Arne Nordskog, who remained active for an additional five years and collaborated with Dr. Lamont on research and teaching. Dr. Lamont was the first female faculty member in the Animal Science Department at ISU which, although sometimes challenging, was also an advantage, as she knew that she had to do her best being the only one of an underrepresented group to stay on her own two feet. Her first teaching assignment was as a co-instructor in the graduate course of Applied Poultry and Swine Breeding with Dr. Lauren Christian. Dr. Lamont utilized working with Dr. Christian by watching his teaching styles and what information was important to include and exclude for students and she started to refine her teaching style.

Dr. Lamont's research program focuses on immunogenetics and molecular genetics in poultry, specifically their responses to stresses, such as heat and pathogens, in order to increase poultry welfare and efficiency. In addition, she has worked on improving technology within the realm of poultry breeding by researching the effectiveness of genomic selection. Dr. Lamont’s most notable discoveries include identifying specific genes and their purpose in the poultry genome, such as analyzing loci controlling blood chemistry components and their response to heat stress[1]. Her work has also included the analysis of chickens’ response to E. coli and Salmonella bacteria by detecting genes which increase the immune response to infection[2]. Dr. Lamont is currently working to improve poultry breeds suitable for living in African climates. Dr. Lamont hopes to continue discovering new knowledge in the poultry field through her research on topics such as analyzing the genes responsible for African chickens’ adaptation to their climate and genes addressing heat stress and resistance to infectious disease in poultry.

Dr. Lamont became Associate Professor in 1987, Full Professor in 1991, and Distinguished Professor in 2004.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Lamont has received many awards during her time as a faculty member at Iowa State University. In an interview, she commented on how her teammates throughout the years have been a blessing to herself and her work. “An award is a reflection of the team’s abilities and successes, not just my own.”
