Timothy Joseph Serdynski (born August 19, 1982 in Geneva, OH) is most well known as the front man for the acoustic-based indie pop group [https://www.facebook.com/myownsky/ My Own Sky] from 1999-2004, then as a solo singer/songwriter from 2005-present. Prior to writing and performing his own music, [https://www.facebook.com/timserdynski/ Tim] served as bassist in the now defunct bands Bellyflow, [https://www.facebook.com/TheColorside/ The Colorside], and The Saturday Club. (dates unknown) Early LifeTim was born in Geneva, OH to parents John and Kathleen Serdynski. At age 3, the family moved to Lakeland, FL where Tim has spent most of his life. As a pre-teen, Tim always had an interest in music as his uncle, who worked as a DJ at WCIE atop Carpenter's Home Church in Lakeland, FL was sort of an early role-model. In grade school, Tim was part of the choir, earning recital solos and was chosen to represent Crystal Lake Elementary in the State Honor Choir one year. Tim played the Viola for a short period, giving it up for Alto Saxophone and the allure of marching band in middle and high school. Tim played saxophone for a total of 7 years, achieving 1st chair in Marching and Jazz Bands. His first official opportunity to perform with a rock band came in High School when asked to fill in on saxophone for a local Ska Band called The Adjustments. That lasted one show, but cemented Tim's desire to be a part of the indie music scene somehow. Not having any other immediate prospects to perform in a band, through permission from his church (Greenhouse Community in Lakeland), Tim began booking concerts at what became a well known central, FL venue (The Greenhouse). Through those endeavors, Tim met and worked with many bands he both idolized and would come to work with in the future in other ways. An alternative band called Bellyflow being the first of those bands. Tim also went on to book shows for other Lakeland venues The Loft, The Mad Hatter, and Java Joe's. He never actually even received his first bass guitar until late in high school though and his first guitar, even later. Music CareerUpon receipt of his first bass guitar late in high school years, Tim taught himself to play with an instructional book and by learning all the songs to one of his favorite local bands, Bellyflow whom he had befriended the members of through his concert bookings. When their bassist decided to take up second guitar in the group, Tim was asked to join full-time on bass, having already learned the songs. During his time in Bellyflow, who later changed their name to The Colorside, Tim booked more than half of their shows, using his experience as a promoter to obtain and advertise gigs, and boost the local perception of the band. He was also able to experience short tours and record a full-length with the band in Nashville, TN. Towards the last year or so of his time with The Colorside, Tim had received his first acoustic guitar and began writing songs, trying them out publicly at the prompting of a friend, who was the owner of one of the venues he booked for, Java Joe's. Some time after, Tim dubbed his solo endeavor My Own Sky, favoring a "band" name as an acoustic act, being a fan of Dashboard Confessional. Although most of the time, My Own Sky did perform live as a band, with a rotating cast of friends and borrowed musicians who backed Tim live. Tim was asked to leave The Colorside shortly after when he voiced a suggested "move" to Nashville as foolish and short-sighted, stating he would not move with the band. Many lessons were learned over the years when it came to collaborating with so many musicians in My Own Sky. Mainly legal issues ranging from inexperienced musicians who did not understand the concept of being a paid back-up musician versus being a full-member with the ability or right to make group-changing decisions, and Tim's lack of assertiveness to make those things known up-front. Tim always struggled with creative differences, wanting a true pop/rock sound in a scene of alternative influenced musicians, he felt like My Own Sky, while well liked, was never exactly what he wanted it to be. Several times, the power struggle in the group and creative preferences would lead to blow-ups and a total rebuilding of the band. The last incarnation of the band included Garrett Dempsey on bass and Ryan Belch on drums which included a short north-eastern tour, a performance at Cornerstone Festival Florida, and So-Fo Music Festival at Southeastern University. To avoid any future legal or power struggles that come with a band, Tim started performing solo in 2005 using his name. Tim's 2007 release, Songs for the Missing utilized a few great musicians, some of whom accompanied Tim for the better part of a year and a half for the release show, on tour and a few festivals like Cornerstone Festival Florida 2007. After that particular group fizzled out on friendly terms and life getting in the way, Tim continued to perform solo and release albums. At the time this was written, the last time Tim is known to have played with a backup band is for 2015's Waves of Glory at Wet N Wild Orlando with Plumb. Meanwhile, Tim performed five consecutive years at Walt Disney's Night of Joy, among other festivals like the Florida Music Festival, and toured independently and in conjunction with other solo artists and bands.
