Tony Haymet (born February 5, 1956) is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Director & Vice-Chancellor Emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, where he was the 10th director. Haymet currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Worldfish, based in Penang. He chairs the Governance Committee and will serve as Vice Chair from July 1, 2019. Worldfish, formerly known as ICLARM, is one of the CGIAR centers for agricultural research and supports projects in 13 developing countries in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

Career

Dr. Haymet is a highly distinguished researcher with more than 170 peer-reviewed scientific articles
Between 1981 and 1991 Haymet worked at Harvard University, UC Berkeley, and University of Utah
In 1991, Haymet became Professor and Chair of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Sydney
In 1998, Haymet became Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston and founded the University of Houston Environmental Modelling Institute
In 2003, Haymet became Chief of Marine & Atmospheric Research at CSIRO Australia
In 2006, Haymet was appointed director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego
In 2010, Haymet and Anthony Berryman, a Compton High School english and philosophy teacher, founded a summer program for Compton students^[1] at Scripps

Business

Haymet and Jim Dufour spun ocean robot company MRV Systems LLC out of Scripps in 2010. When he retired from Scripps, Haymet and his business partners acquired a controlling interest in the company, which manufactures in Itasca, Illinois. In 2014, MRV delivered a new small profiling float, the ALAMO (Air-Launched Autonomous Micro-Observer)^[2], that can be launched from many research aircraft to observe the upper ocean structure for over a year.

Education

Haymet earned chemistry degrees from the University of Sydney (1978) and the University of Chicago (PhD 1981).

Honors

Haymet is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

From 2009-2015, Haymet served on the primary policy advisory body of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and chaired the advisors during his final term.^[3]

On March 31, 2007, Haymet gave the opening address at Kevin Rudd’s climate change summit at Parliament house in Canberra, Australia. ^[4] Rudd became Prime Minister of Australia seven months later on November 24, 2007.
