He did a doctorate on the nightingale with Heinz Durrer, completed in 2004.[7] This was followed by a research stay at University of Oslo. Since 2006, Amrhein teaches ornithology, conservation biology and statistics at the Zoological Institute of the University of Basel. Since 2017, Amrhein is Professor of Zoology at the University of Basel.[9] In addition, he works as a science journalist and from 2012 to 2016 was Head of Communications at the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences. Since 2017 he is editor of the journal "Der Ornithologische Beobachter" at the Swiss Ornithological Institute Sempach.[3] PrivateAmrhein is married and father of three daughters.[2] During his studies he played violin in various orchestras and chamber music formations.[8] Key Publications
