释义 | Villa Vallambrosa or more correctly Villa Vallombrosa is a Historical Cultural Monument in the City of Los Angeles. Designated number 603, it was awarded in 1994. Built by Eleanor Dewitt in 1929, the Villa was designed by architect Nathan Coleman, who had built many of the houses in surrounding Whitley Heights. The Villa incorporated many of DeWitt's own ideas, as it is constructed in an unusual Tuscan/Venetian Gothic style. Thanks to the recession of 1929, Dewitt rented the Villa at first, and many of the most dramatic and iconic Hollywood movies of the 1930s and '40s were credited to industry people who had rented or visited the house, writers like Anita Loos, and Ben Hecht, as well as costume designers like Gilbert Adrian and Omar Kayam. Her first tenant was Gilbert Adrian, one of the most influential costume designers in America, who was just beginning his career. He rented the Villa for two and a half years between April 1932 to October 1934. During this time, Adrian worked on thirteen films, including the Academy Award-winning Grand Hotel starring Greta Garbo, as well as Queen Christina, also starring Garbo and with actor John Gilbert. Subsequent tenants were the fashion photographer Baron de Meyer, and Edward James, a significant early British patron of surrealist art. |
