William Akers October 20, 1880 – June 8, 1889 was born in Springfield, Louisiana and settled in the area that was to become Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He began to buy land in the area which helped to found the city of Ponchatoula, Louisiana and he became the first Mayor of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He was the son of Thomas Akers who came from Belfast Ireland. His first wife was named Margaret Richardson and his elder son was Thomas Matthew Akers. Thomas M. Akers also served as the Mayor of Ponchatoula. Several of William Akers sons fought in the Civil War.
