Wipro Enterprises Private Limited is an is an unlisted, India-based company that has Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, and Wipro Infrastructure Engineering under its umbrella and is headquartered in Bengaluru, India.

In 2012, Wipro demerged its IT business into a separate business entity.[3]

History

Wipro was initially incorporated on December 29, 1945, by Mohammed Hashim Premji in Amalner, Maharashtra, as Western India Vegetable Products Limited, which was later abbreviated to Wipro. Initially, it was set up as a vegetable and refined oil manufacturing entity under the tradenames Camel, Sunflower and Kisan.[4][5]

In 1966, after Mohamed Premji's death, his son Azim Premji returned from Stanford University and took over Wipro as its chairman at the age of 21.[6]

Wipro established an oil crushing unit in Amalner, Maharashtra, India, in 1947[7]. Wipro Infrastructure Engineering, a part of Wipro Enterprises, was established in the year 1976[8]. The company entered soap manufacturing in the year 1986 with the launch of the brand, Santoor.[9] Wipro entered the domestic lighting market in 1991 and later expanded into institutional lighting. It further entered into markets such as baby care range, fabric care, office furniture, modular switches, and health and wellness products, introducing brands such as Glucovita, Chandrika soap, North West Switches, and Unza.[10]

Wipro Furniture, which is a part of Wipro Enterprises, was formed in the year 2004.[11]

The company established Wipro 3D, additive manufacturing business in 2012.[12] Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIN) Automation was established in 2018.[13]

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting (WCCLG) caters to the FMCG segment, and since its establishment in 1945, has gone on to sell personal care products like Santoor, Chandrika, Aramusk and Yardley, which are its toilet soap brands.[14] It also owns the Wipro Safewash and Wipro Baby Soft ranges.[15] WCCLG also sells lighting products that include Smartlite CFL[16], and LED Lights.[17]

Wipro Infrastructure Engineering

Wipro Infrastructure Engineering is a part of Wipro Enterprises and primarily deals with its hydraulics business, established in 1976 and includes the company’s water treatment business.[18] Wipro Infrastructure Engineering is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders.[19] Wipro 3D, which is a part of Wipro Infrastructure Engineering, is India’s largest fully integrated metal additive manufacturing facility.[20]

Mergers and Acquisitions

Chandrika, which is an ayurvedic and herbal soap brand, was acquired in 2004.[21]

Northwest Switches was acquired in 2006 for Rs. 102.2 crore.[22] In the same year, Sweden-based Hydrauto Group AB was acquired for Rs. 142.6 crore.[23]

Singapore-based Unza Holdings Ltd. was acquired in 2007 for Rs. 1,010 crore.[24]

The personal care brand Yardley from the Lornamead Group was acquired for an undisclosed amount in 2009.[25]

Men’s toiletry brand, Aramusk, was acquired in 2011.[26] In the same year, a majority stake was acquired in Brazil-based hydraulic cylinder manufacturer RKM Equipamentos Hidraulicos. Wipro Enterprises also entered into a joint venture with Kawasaki Precision Machinery Pvt. Ltd. to manufacture hydraulic pumps for excavators in 2011.[27]

L D Waxsons Group, a Singapore-based FMCG company was acquired for $144 million in 2013.[28] In the same year, SC Hervil SA in Romania was acquired.[29]

Zhongshan Ma Er Daily Products Ltd, a Chinese FMCG company, was acquired for an undisclosed amount in 2016. In the same year, Israel’s H R Givon, which manufactures metallic parts and assemblies for aerospace industry, was acquired.[30]

A minority stake in Happily Unmarried, which is a digital-first platform that sells male and female grooming products online, was acquired in 2017. In the same year, Wipro Infrastructure Engineering tied up with Israel Aerospace Industries to manufacture compositeaerostructure parts and assemblies.

Social Initiatives

Wipro Cares is the social contribution arm of Wipro Enterprises.[31] It is broadly engaged in areas such as education, primary healthcare, environment and disaster rehabilitation.[32] Wipro Enterprises’ Santoor Scholarship Program contributes to girl education among the underprivileged in Karnataka, Telanganaand Andhra Pradesh.[33]

Awards and Recognitions

In 2010, Wipro Lighting won Design for Asia award in the product design category for its LED streetlight.[34]

In 2016, Wipro Lighting won India Design Mark for Certified Excellence in Product Design.[35]

In 2017, Wipro Lighting won International Diamond Prize for Excellence in Quality by European Society of Quality Research.[36] In the same year, it won, Red Dot Design award for outstanding design, Global SSL Showcase Top100, India Design Mark for certified excellence in Product Design, and Frost & Sullivan award for LED lighting visionary innovation leadership.[37]
