Ehud Arye Laniado (1953/1954 – 3 March 2019) was a Belgian Israeli billionaire diamond trader. He began as a masseur at the Hilton Hotel in Tel Aviv before later setting up Omega Diamonds in Antwerp and running Mercury Diamond, a diamond pricing consultancy.

In November 2015, Laniado sold the Blue Moon of Josephine diamond at Sotheby's in Geneva for a world record price of $48.4 million (43.2 million Swiss francs plus fees).

Career

Laniado began working as a masseur based at the Hilton Hotel in Tel Aviv.[1]

Laniado was the founder and owner of Antwerp-based Omega Diamonds, and owned Mercury Diamond, a diamond pricing consultancy.[1]

In November 2015, Laniado sold the Blue Moon of Josephine diamond at Sotheby's in Geneva for a world record price of $48.4 million (43.2 million Swiss francs plus fees).[1] The buyer was Hong Kong billionaire and convicted fugitive Joseph Lau.[2]

At the time of his death, Laniado had been in the diamond business for 40 years.[1] On 14 March 2019, Laniado had been due to appear in a Belgian court on charges of tax evasion.[1]

Personal life

Laniado had had "a number of plastic surgery procedures".[3] He died from a heart attack on 3 March 2019, aged 65, during penis enlargement surgery in France.[4]
