It was named after the anthropologist H. Otley Beyer.[1] The type specimen was discovered on Cabarruyan Island in The Philippines but has since been lost. Further fossils were found in Visayas and at a number of sites in Luzon. It is unclear if these belonged to Elephas beyeri or Elephas namadicus due to their fragmented nature and the missing holotype.[2] References1. ^{{cite book | title=Philippine History | publisher=Rex Bookstore, Inc. | year=2004 | pages=7 | isbn=9789712339349}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q24884054}}{{Paleo-mammal-stub}}2. ^{{cite book | title=Evolution of Island Mammals: Adaptation and Extinction of Placental Mammals on Islands | publisher=John Wiley & Sons |author1=Alexandra van der Geer |author2=George Lyras |author3=John de Vos |author4=Michael Dermitzakis | year=2011 | pages=223 | isbn=9781444391282}} 3 : Extinct mammals|Proboscideans|Fossil taxa described in 1956 |
