The site is located in the Bitterroot Mountains, {{convert|5|mi}} north of the community of Tendoy. According to an entry in Clark's journal on August 13, 1905, Lewis unfurled an American flag at the site to greet two women whom the party encountered. Local researcher Dave Ainsworth determined that this encounter was the first time an American flag had been unfurled west of the Continental Divide; his findings were confirmed by a National Park Service historian.[2] The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 22, 1975.[1] At the time, the site was marked by a historic sign, though several parties were planning to install a monument.[2] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{NRHP in Idaho by county}}{{Idaho-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Cramer|first1=Bob|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory - Nomination Form: First Flag Unfurling Site, Lewis and Clark Trail|url=http://history.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/First_Flag_Unfurling_Site_Lewis_and_Clark_Trail_75000635.pdf|publisher=Idaho State Historical Society|accessdate=November 24, 2015|date=June 29, 1973}} 4 : National Register of Historic Places in Idaho|Lewis and Clark Expedition|Tourist attractions in Lemhi County, Idaho|National Register of Historic Places in Lemhi County, Idaho |
