In their 18th year under head coach Henry L. Williams, the Golden Gophers compiled a 4–1 record (3–1 against Western Conference opponents) and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 164 to 25.[1] The 1917 season was almost canceled due to the United States entering World War I, but over the summer, the decision was made to play a reduced football schedule.[2] The team finished second in the Big Ten.[3] Tackle George Hauser was named an All-American by the Associated Press.[4] Hauser was also named All-Big Ten first team.[5] Schedule{{CFB schedule|{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 13 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1917|team=South Dakota State Jackrabbits|title=South Dakota State}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 64–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 20 | w/l = w | opponent = Indiana | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 33–9 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 3 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = Wisconsin | gamename = Rivalry | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, WI | score = 7–10 | attend = 12,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 17 | w/l = w | opponent = Chicago | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 33–0 | attend = 14,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 24 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Illinois | site_stadium = Illinois Field | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 27–6 | attend = 4,500 }} }} References1. ^{{cite web|title=1917 Minnesota Golden Gophers Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=November 1, 2017|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/minnesota/1917-schedule.html}} {{Minnesota Golden Gophers football navbox}}2. ^{{cite book | last = General Alumni | title = History | pages = 150}} 3. ^{{Cite web | last = Keiser | first = Jeff | title = 2007 Media Guide | pages = 197 | year = 2007 | url = http://www.gophersports.com//pdf6/80499.pdf?SPSID=39281&SPID=3280&DB_OEM_ID=8400 | postscript = }}{{dead link|date=March 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 4. ^{{Cite web | last = Keiser | first = Jeff | title = 2007 Media Guide | pages = 179 | year = 2007 | url = http://www.gophersports.com//pdf6/80499.pdf?SPSID=39281&SPID=3280&DB_OEM_ID=8400 | postscript = }}{{dead link|date=March 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 5. ^{{Cite web | last = Keiser | first = Jeff | title = 2007 Media Guide | pages = 180 | year = 2007 | url = http://www.gophersports.com//pdf6/80499.pdf?SPSID=39281&SPID=3280&DB_OEM_ID=8400 | postscript = }}{{dead link|date=March 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 3 : 1917 Big Ten Conference football season|Minnesota Golden Gophers football seasons|1917 in Minnesota |
