The Gstaad Palace is a hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland, established in December 1913. HistoryThe hotel was established in December 1913 by Manfred Hacker. In 1947 he has lost the property to the Scherz family from whom he has re bought it in 1991. The hotel got traction from a recent railway connection to Gstaad, and was a convenient stay for parents visiting their children in nearby universities. It has been owned for 75 years by the Scherz- Hacker family and is run now in 3rd Generation by Patrizia Hacker's husband Andrea Scherz.[1][2] In 1975, the hotel served as the backdrop for the movie The Return of the Pink Panther.[3] In 1999, the high energy usage of the city's visitors during Christmas day blew up the town's power grid and led to a 4-day power shortage. The hotel adapted to the situation by creating a romantic, candle-lit atmosphere.[2] The spa was renovated in 2007/2008. The 6th floor was renovated in 2013-2014.It is now managed by Patrizia Hacker's husband Andrea Scherz and her.[1] DescriptionThe Gstaad Palace has 104 guest rooms, but more than 200 staff rooms, as the number of employees grows from 50 to 300 in December for the winter season. At night, the indoor swimming pool and the nightclub's dancefloor merge into one big pool party. The fancier restaurant of the hotel, Le Grill, has a strict dress code.[1] Famous guestsGuests have included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton,[1] Roger Moore, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Prince Rainier, Grace Kelly, George Soros and Margaret Thatcher.[4] Michael Jackson once offered to buy the hotel, but his offer was turned down.[3]References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|last1=Weakley|first1=Catherine|title=The Gstaad Palace turns 100|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/ski/articles/The-Gstaad-Palace-turns-100/|accessdate=2 January 2016|work=The Daily Telegraph|date=26 March 2014}} 2. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Anselmo-Khan|first1=Alexis|title=Gstaad's double life: from sleepy resort to billionaire's Christmas playground|url=https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/dec/22/gstaad-double-life-switzerland-billionaire-christmas-rich-famous-madonna-weinstein|accessdate=2 January 2016|work=The Guardian|date=22 December 2015}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.director.co.uk/16331-2-gstaad-palace-review/|title=Gstaad Palace: a classic fairytale of style and elegance|website=Director.co.uk|date=9 March 2016|author=Vivien Cotterill-Lee|access-date=31 January 2017}} 4. ^{{cite book|author=International Skiing History Association|title=Skiing Heritage Journal|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OijwKxr1ER0C&pg=PA12|accessdate=2 January 2016|date=April 2011|publisher=International Skiing History Association|pages=12–14|issn=1082-2895}} External links{{Commons category|Palace Hotel, Gstaad}}
