While HC continues to prefabricate homes,[1] its activities have extended to supplying community facilities, education and worker training, health care, microcredit, and special services for abused women and children.[2] HistoryHogar de Cristo was founded in 1971 by Ecuadoran Francisco García and Chilean Josse Van der Rest, priests of the Society of Jesus. They were inspired by a similar work founded by Jesuit Alberto Hurtado in Chile in 1944, and were responding to an unusually large need for housing in Guayaquil. By 1996, Hogar de Cristo received the UN's World Habitat Award,[3] for producing cheap 100,000 homes made from prefabricated bamboo panels.[4] In 2008 a grant of 200,000 euros from the Basque government in Spain subsidized the construction of a third plant, in Quevedo, Ecuador.[5] References1. ^{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OvYSyFrtghQC&pg=PA111&lpg=PA111&dq=Hogar+de+Cristo,+Guayaquil&source=bl&ots=Ut7Q7Ktnhi&sig=Bv-ZP6E9y89Ko3yFRDEPUpC4IRE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiLxr2C9YLTAhVmzIMKHRzqCw44KBDoAQiZATAS#v=onepage&q=Hogar%20de%20Cristo%2C%20Guayaquil&f=false|title=Theories and Practices of Development|date=2005|publisher=Routledge|isbn=978-0-415-59070-9|location=New York|pages=111|authorlink=Katie Willis|accessdate=1 April 2017}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.bshf.org/world-habitat-awards/winners-and-finalists/viviendas-del-hogar-de-cristo-guayaquil/|title=Viviendas del Hogar de Cristo, Guayaquil - BSHF|work=BSHF|access-date=2017-04-02|language=en-US}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2008/03/12/suvivienda/1205338445.html|title=Un misionero valenciano inaugurará su tercera fábrica de casas prefabricadas en Ecuador {{!}} elmundo.es|last=Mundinteractivos|website=www.elmundo.es|access-date=2017-04-01}} 6 : Jesuit development centres|Organizations established in 1971|Non-profit organisations based in Ecuador|Homelessness charities|Poverty-related organizations|Community-building organizations |
