The first internment took place February 16, 1880, and covers {{convert|12|acre|m2}}. The cemetery features a Grade II listed chapel which was designed by Innocent and Brown.^[1]

The cemetery took its name from the earlier City Road Cemetery which was originally known as Intake Road Cemetery.^[2]
