Early life and educationThompson grew up in the Western Suburbs of Sydney, Australia, and is of Maltese-descent. She went to Catherine McAuley High School, Westmead and studied acting at three drama schools, including the Sydney Theatre Company.[3][4] Thompson attended the University of Technology Sydney and received a B.A. in Media Arts and Production.[5] CareerThompson has made several short films, including, Hike, Percepio and Across the Pond. Thompson won the Kodak Film Award for New Directors for Hike, and Across the Pond was selected as a finalist at the Tropfest Short Film Festival[6] and also screened at the Bath Film Festival.[7] Thompson worked as a film editor in Sydney, Australia. She moved to New York City in 2010, where she founded Stedfast Productions, a collective of visual storytellers.[3] Thompson edited Cheryl Furjanic’s documentary, Back on Board: Greg Louganis, which premiered on HBO in August 2015[8] and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2016.[9] Thompson has also worked as a film editor with Academy Award-nominated filmmakers, Liz Garbus, and Edet Belzberg.[10] Thompson made her feature writing and directorial debut with The Light of the Moon (2017), starring Stephanie Beatriz, Michael Stahl-David, Conrad Ricamora and Catherine Curtin. It had its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival (SXSW)[11] in March 2017, where it won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature Film.[12] Leslie Felperin from The Hollywood Reporter called the film "honest and complex" and stated that "Thompson clearly has a knack with actors, coaxing sharp, believable performances from all involved".[13] Andrew Barker from Variety called the film "harrowingly effective" and "sensitive without ever being sanctimonious, brutally frank without ever lapsing into exploitation".[14] The film was acquired by Imagination Worldwide and will have a limited North American theatrical release in November, 2017.[15] Amazon has acquired the streaming rights to the film through their Film Festival Stars program. The film will be released on the Amazon Video Direct platform in early 2018.[16] Thompson is represented by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone Management.[17][18] Personal lifeIn 2010, Thompson moved from Sydney, Australia to Brooklyn, New York, where she lived in the neighborhood of Williamsburg[19] for eight years.
