{{Use dmy dates|date=March 2017}}Kathy Temin (born 1968) is an Australian artist who uses synthetic fur to create sculptural objects and installations.[1] She is represented in a number of public collections in Australia and New Zealand and is a professor at Monash University in Melbourne.[2] She is represented by Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne,[3] and Hamish McKay Gallery, New Zealand.[4]

Use of synthetic fur

Temin predominantly works with faux fur.[5] Temin says that she uses this fabric, which is associated with children's toys, to generate an emotional response.[6] Writing on Frieze.com, Kit Wise has described the appearance of her sculptural works as "roughly cobbled together or misshapen, deliberately undercutting any idealism associated with the art object and positing instead something far more anxious and awkward.".[7] Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald on the Royal Academy of Arts show "Australia" in London, esteemed Australian art critic John MacDonald was not impressed, and referred to Temins work simply as "three large furry things"[8] Temin has also worked with other textiles such as felt.[9]

Works about fan culture

Temin is also known for her series of works about the Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, of whom Temin herself has been a fan since adolescence, and the phenomenon of fandom culture.[10]

Early life and family background

Temin's father was a Jewish Hungarian holocaust survivor, who was interned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp prior to migrating to Australia.[11] Her father worked as a tailor, and Temin has described how exposure to his work helped her to learn the sewing and craft techniques that she later utilised in her art.[6]
