}}M. Lorena González is an American politician and civil rights attorney. She serves on the Seattle City Council representing the 9th position. She was the first Latina elected to the council.[1]

Early life and education

González was born on February 20[2] in Prosser, Washington and raised in Grandview, Washington.[3] She has five siblings.[5] Her parents came to the US as undocumented immigrants in the early 1960s, but became legal permanent residents. She described her early life as a "Spanish-speaking migrant farmworker household."[6] González was crowned Grandview Miss Junior in 1994.[3]

González attended Yakima Valley College - Grandview Campus and earned a degree in business from Washington State University in 1999.[3] In 2002, she began attending the Seattle University School of Law, earning her JD in 2005.[4][6]

Career

After graduating from law school, González worked as an attorney on employment and gender discrimination cases. She was also board president of One America, an immigrant and human rights organization based in Seattle. In 2014, she became legal counsel to Seattle mayor Ed Murray.[5]

In 2015, González ran for the 9th Position on the Seattle City Council after Sally J. Clark dropped her reelection bid for one of the two remaining at-large seats on the council.[6] Gonzalez won the election and replaced John Okamoto, who was temporarily on the council after Clark resigned to take a job at the University of Washington. González was the first Latina to be elected to the council.[1]

Personal life

González has lived in Seattle since 2002 as a resident of the Capitol Hill, First Hill, Ballard, South Park, and White Center neighborhoods.[4] She currently resides in West Seattle's Alaska Junction.[6][7] She married her husband, Cameron, in November 2017.[8][9]
