{{short description|planned city in Indonesia}}Meikarta is a planned city project in Indonesia. It was proposed by PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency. Meikarta was officially launched on 17 August 2017.[1][2] The project is located on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.[3] According to the company, before the launch Lippo Group has managed to sell around 99,300 apartment units.[4] Lippo Group has also invested more than 278 trillion rupiah for the project.[5]

Planned facilities

The project plans to target the lower middle class.[6] The city is planned to be around several industrial areas such as Cikarang and Jababeka. The developer has also promised prominent healthcare facilities from Siloam Group, international finance center, 10 international hotels, 50 international and national schools, 3 national universities, Indonesian Silicon Valley, industrial research center, and 7 shopping malls.[7][8]

Controversy

It reaped protests from several parties, including the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesian Consumer Institution Foundation (YLKI) and Deputy Governor of West Java Deddy Mizwar because it lacks necessary permission.[9][10] As of December 2018, the project is under investigation by Corruption Eradication Commission due to the alleged gratification from the developer to Bekasi regent for the land permit.[11] Neneng Hassanah Yasin, the Bupati regent at that time, has been arrested after being accused to receive Rp 13 billion from a Lippo Group executive.[12] Billy Sindoro, a Lippo Group executive, has also been arrested for the case.[13] The CEO of the company, James Riady, has also been questioned by the Corruption Eradication Commission for his role in the case.[14] As of December 2018, the trial is still ongoing for the suspects.[15]

Despite the case, the developer is still continuing the construction of the project and continues to market the property in festivals [16] and in shopping malls.
