Both of these businesses were sold to Brown Shoe Company (now Caleres).[2] Stores also operated in Anderson, Kokomo, Marion, and Elkhart, Indiana; Carbondale, Danville, and Mattoon, Illinois; and Paducah, Kentucky.[3] Brown Group sold the Meis chain, then consisting of ten stores, to Elder-Beerman in 1989.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tribstar.com/news/local_news/meis-name-returns-downtown/article_87ce52e8-bf0d-59f2-be63-4aa404809532.html|title=Meis name returns downtown|last=Greninger|first=Howard|date=October 5, 2012|work=Tribstar.com|accessdate=19 September 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://stlcin.missouri.org/history/peopledetail.cfm?Master_ID=1724|title=Brown Group Inc.|work=Missouri.org|accessdate=19 September 2017}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tribstar.com/news/lifestyles/historical-treasure-many-memories-of-the-downtown-meis-store/article_08e8dc46-8055-5396-8c6a-7329700672d7.html|title=HISTORICAL TREASURE: Many memories of the downtown Meis store|last=Hagan|first=Marylee|date=December 18, 2011|work=Tribstar.com|accessdate=19 September 2017}} 4. ^{{cite news |url=http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=SL&p_theme=sl&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0EB04C1E808ADDB7&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM |title=Brown Group Sells Department Stores |newspaper=St. Louis Post-Dispatch |date=April 29, 1989 |page=13a |author= |subscription=yes |quote=Brown Group Inc. said Friday that as part of its restructuring effort it has sold its Meis department store unit to an Ohio retailing chain.
