Since 2015 it has been a part of the municipality of Krimpenerwaard. The former municipality covered an area of {{convert|{{Dutch municipality total area|Bergambacht}}|km2|abbr=on}} of which {{convert|{{Dutch municipality water area|Bergambacht}}|km2|abbr=on}} was water, and had a population of {{formatnum:{{Dutch municipality population|Bergambacht}}}} as of {{YEAR|{{Dutch municipality population|popbaseyear}}}}. The former municipality included the communities of Ammerstol and Berkenwoude, which were separate municipalities until they merged with Bergambacht in 1985.
