It has a single tubular leaf and up to twenty five small, pale yellowish-green flowers. It is found in South Australia and Victoria although regarded by some taxonomists as a South Australian endemic. DescriptionPrasophyllum occidentale is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single tube-shaped leaf {{convert|100-250|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide at the base. Between seven and twenty five flowers are arranged along a flowering spike {{convert|60-110|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long reaching to a height of {{convert|150-300|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}. The flowers are pale yellowish-green, {{convert|12-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|7-10|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. As with others in the genus, the flowers are inverted so that the labellum is above the column rather than below it. The dorsal sepal is lance-shaped to egg-shaped, {{convert|7-8|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are {{convert|7-8.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, free and more or less parallel to each other. The petals are linear to lance-shaped, {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and curve forwards. The labellum is lance-shaped to egg-shaped, {{convert|4.5-5.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|3.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and turns sharply upwards near its middle. The upturned part has crinkled edges and there is a raised, shiny green or brownish callus in the centre of the labellum and extending almost to its tip. Flowering occurs from August to October.[1][2]Taxonomy and namingPrasophyllum occidentale was first formally described in 1908 by Richard Sanders Rogers and the description was published in Transactions, proceedings and report, Royal Society of South Australia.[3][4] The specific epithet (occidentale) is a Latin word meaning "western".[5]Distribution and habitatThe plains leek orchid grows in grassy places and in shrubland and is common and widespread, mostly in the west of South Australia.[1] It is less common in Victoria, occurring in the south-west of that state. Some authorities regard this species as a South Australian endemic, and collections in Victoria to be of a closely related, as yet undescribed species.[2] References1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =210}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Jeanes|first1=Jeff|title=Prasophyllum occidentale|url=https://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/c92b3c74-be66-428d-b5e9-7cb50b8bab12|publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria|accessdate=19 January 2018}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|title=Prasophyllum occidentale|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/535291|publisher=APNI|accessdate=19 January 2018}} 4. ^{{cite journal|last1=Rogers|first1=Richard S.|title=Description of a new species of orchid.|journal=Transactions, proceedings and report,Royal Society of South Australia|volume=32|page=11|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/84665#page/23/mode/1up|accessdate=19 January 2018}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page = 853}} External links
