}} Rola Nashef is an American director, screenwriter, producer and multimedia artist based in Detroit, MI. She is best known for her award-winning film, Detroit Unleaded. Early life and educationRola Nashef(b. October 12, 1972) was born in Sidon, Lebanon to Franco and Salima Nashef.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Nashef's father Franco is from Maghdouché, whereas her mother Salima is from Deir Mimas; both small Christian villages in the south of Lebanon. In 1978, her family fled the Lebanese Civil War and immigrated to the United States where they settled in Lansing, Michigan where her father worked as a skilled tradesmen at General Motors.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Nashef grew up in a multi-ethnic enclave on the south side of Lansing nicknamed the "Coachlight" area. Growing up in such a diverse neighborhood heavily shaped Nashef's world view: "...[as] an ESL kid in a working class neighborhood, it was my new found American friends who became my teachers and outlet to our new world." [1] Nashef and her two younger brothers were also raised close to various cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents and were taught the value of living within such a tight-knit extended family.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} In 1990, Nashef graduated from Waverly High School and went on to study at Lansing Community College.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Nashef then attended Michigan State University, Madonna University and Oakland Community College where she studied political science, marketing research, paralegal studies, sociology, accounting, art and photography, before graduating from the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan in [1997] with a degree in Directing and Producing.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} CareerNashef began her filmmaking career with 8:30, a romantic comedy short film that was presented at the Arab Screen Independent Film Festival in Doha, Qatar during 2001.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Following the success of her first short film and after raising $20,000 from local Detroit communities, Nashef developed and directed a short-film version of Detroit Unleaded, which went on to win "Best Short Film" at the Trinity Film Festival as well as "Best Performance" at the New Haven Underground Film Festival.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} The experience would inspire Nashef to expand the film's original story and write, produce, and direct Detroit Unleaded for feature-length release.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} As a slice-of-life dramedy that centers around an Arab-owned 24-hour gas station in Detroit, Detroit Unleaded holds its place in American cinema history as the very first Arab-American romantic comedy portraying second generation Arab characters specific to Detroit and Dearborn.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, where Nashef won the inaugural Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Prior to its release, Detroit Unleaded was supported by the Sundance Institute Screenwriter's Lab, IFP New York, Emerging Visions, Lincoln Center and the A2E Distribution Lab, SFFS.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} In addition to filmmaking, Nashef works as a multi-media artist; having created Facing Identity, a permanent installation in the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Other exhibits include Exquisite Crisis and Encounters, a multidisciplinary exhibition at NYU, in addition to The WOMEN Show in Detroit, MI and the Los Angeles Islam Arts Initiative show in 2014.{{Citation needed|date= May 2018}} Awards{{BLP unsourced section|date= May 2018}}
