|name = Steve McCormick |image = |office = (Former) CEO The Nature Conservancy and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation |term_start = 2000 |term_end = 2014 |birth_date = {{birth year and age|1951}} |spouse = Kathryn |children = 2 |alma_mater = UC Berkeley, University of California, Hastings College of the Law }} Steve McCormick is the former president of The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (2007-2014) and the former president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy (2000-2007). In May 2014, Gordon Moore announced that McCormick was leaving the Moore Foundation[1] to co-found a startup to create the first global, open-source database on ecosystem services and natural capital, called The Earth Genome.[2] McCormick is a board member for many social impact and environmental organizations. The Nature ConservancyMcCormick is credited with reorganizing The Nature Conservancy (TNC) into a "truly global entity to fulfill its mission."[3][3][4][5][6] During his tenure, the group grew to operate in 30 countries and all 50 states in the United States, with revenues in excess of $650 million,[7] with its assets increasing to $5.4 billion.[8] McCormick began his career with TNC in 1976 as western regional legal counsel. He then spent 16 years as executive director of California and Western Region.[9] In 2004, he asked TNC's science staff to develop a framework to guide global conservation at the organization, which ultimately produced The Atlas of Global Conservation to collate environmental information[10][12][11] He led the effort to create and incorporate the strategic framework that still guides the group's work, called Conservation by Design (see "Method" at The Nature Conservancy).[12][13][14] On June 8, 2005, McCormick defended TNC's land acquisition practices in front of the United States Senate Committee on Finance,[15] after a 2003 Washington Post article, [https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/26/AR2007062600803.html Nonprofit Land Bank Amasses Millions], questioned TNC's motives.[16][17] An academic study of the incident concluded that the Post's analysis was "reductionist" to the point of "misleading."[18] The Moore FoundationAs president and CEO of the Moore Foundation, McCormick wrote prolifically on the importance of supporting basic science, especially for environmental conservation.[19][20][21][22][23] McCormick oversaw more than $1 billion in grants, many of which were granted to scientific research, including $34.2 million to simulate experimental research in the physics of quantum materials and $12.5 million (joint with Sloan Foundation) to the Berkeley Institute for Data Science.[24][25][26] McCormick left "abruptly" with much speculation as to why.[27][28] It became clear in subsequent months that McCormick left to create a 501(c)(3) non-profit, The Earth Genome, to make environmental information more accessible, using best practices from the tech industry.[29][30] Board service and awardsMcCormick has served on numerous boards, including The Independent Sector,[31] Sustainable Conservation,[32] the California Academy of Sciences,[33] and the advisory board of the UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources.[34] He is the recipient of the Chevron Conservation Award; the Department of Interior Silver Award; and the Edmund G. Brown Award for Environmental and Economic Balance.[34] References1. ^{{cite web|url = https://www.moore.org/about/our-people/staff/mccormick-announcement|title = Steve McCormick to step down after six years of high-impact, visionary leadership|first = Gordon|last = Moore|accessdate = 10 September 2015}} {{DEFAULTSORT:McCormick, Steve}}2. ^{{Cite journal|url = http://ssir.org/articles/entry/a_new_approach_to_global_conservation|title = A New Approach to Global Conservation|last = McCormick|first = Steve|date = 13 May 2014|journal = Stanford Social Innovation Review|doi = |pmid = |access-date = 12 September 2015}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url = https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/01/AR2007100100769.html|title = Nature Conservancy's President Abruptly Announces Resignation|last = Stephens|first = Joe|date = 2 October 2007|work = The Washington Post|access-date = 17 October 2015|via = }} 4. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.thegreenskeptic.com/2007/10/conservation-steve-mccormicks-departure.html|title = Conservation: Steve McCormick's Departure from The Nature Conservancy, Questions and Appreciation|date = 2 October 2015|accessdate = 17 October 2015|website = The Green Skeptic|publisher = |last = Anderson|first = Scott}} 5. ^{{Cite book|title = Nature's Keepers: The Remarkable Story of How the Nature Conservancy Became the Largest Environmental Group in the World|last = Birchard|first = Bill|publisher = John Wiley & Sons|year = 2005|isbn = 0787971588|location = San Francisco, CA|pages = }} 6. ^{{Cite web|url = http://news.yale.edu/2004/04/23/president-and-ceo-nature-conservancy-discuss-sustainable-conservation-model-21st-century|title = President and CEO of Nature Conservancy to Discuss "Sustainable Conservation: A Model for the 21st Century"|date = 23 April 2004|accessdate = 17 October 2015|website = Yale News|publisher = Yale University}} 7. ^1 {{Cite journal|url = http://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Pages/item.aspx?num=29664|title = Nature Conservancy, The|last = Grossman|first = Allen|date = February 2003|journal = Harvard Business School, Case 303-007|doi = |pmid = |access-date = 12 September 2015|last2 = Wei-Skillern|first2 = Jane}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.nature.org/about-us/our-accountability/annual-report/tnc-fs-fy07.pdf|title = Report of Independent Auditors|date = 19 November 2007|accessdate = 10 October 2015|website = The Nature Conservancy: Consolidated Financial Statements|publisher = PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=28088|title = Steve McCormick|date = |accessdate = 10 October 2015|website = |publisher = California Department of Parks of Recreaction}} 10. ^ 11. ^{{Cite book|title = The Atlas of Global Conservation: Changes, Challenges, and Opportunities to Make a Difference|last = Hoekstra|first = Jonathan|publisher = University of California Press|year = 2010|isbn = 9780520262560|location = |pages = |display-authors = et al.}} 12. ^1 {{Cite journal|url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4301179/pdf/jpe0051-1137.pdf|title = The evolving linkage between conservation science and practice at The Nature Conservancy|last = Kareiva|first = Peter|date = 2014|journal = Journal of Applied Ecology|doi = 10.1111/1365-2664.12259|pmid = 25641980|access-date = 10 October 2015|last2 = Groves|first2 = Craig|last3 = Marvier|first3 = Michelle|pmc=4301179|volume=51|pages=1137–1147}} 13. ^{{Cite journal|url = http://www.nature.org/media/aboutus/conservation-by-design-20th-anniversary-edition.pdf|title = Conservation by Design: A Strategic Framework for Mission Success|date = 2016|journal = |doi = |pmid = |access-date = 11 September 2015|publisher = The Nature Conservancy}} 14. ^{{Cite journal|url = http://www.natureserve.org/sites/default/files/publications/files/1995_groves-klein-breden_nhp_network.pdf|title = Natural Heritage Programs: public-private partnerships for biodiversity conservation|last = Groves|first = Craig|date = 1995|journal = Wildlife Society Bulletin|doi = |pmid = |access-date = 10 October 2015|volume = 25|issue = 4|last2 = Klein|first2 = Mary|last3 = Breden|first3 = Thomas|pages = 784–790}} 15. ^{{Cite news|url = http://www.finance.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/sm2test060805.pdf|title = Statement of Steven J.
