The massacre was carried out as retaliation for partisans' action in Papuk.[1] BackgroundOn 12 January 1942, in a direct fight between the Partisans and the Ustashas, five Ustashas were killed, and two wounded, one of whom died later.[2] The Partisans withdrew to Papuk, and Ustashas returned to Voćin and waited for reinforcements from Osijek, Belišće and Virovitica. MassacreOn 13 January, some 300 Ustasha and Domobran soldiers began with plundering and burning Serbian houses. Civilians who tried to escape or provided resistance were killed and all others were arrested and taken to Voćin. On Serbian New Year, January 14, the biggest slaughter of the innocent population in Slavonia at that time started. Almost all the male inhabitants of the villages Jorgići, Zubovići, Dobrići, Kometnik and Sekulinci were killed. During the massacre, a total of 350 civilians were killed. Acts of individual heroism{{Quote box| quote = They led us to a small basement, and as there was no place for everyone, some were forced to lay down. From the group, I was saved by the gendarme sergeant Luka Mustafić, because he noticed that I was a boy of 15 years. He took me by the hand, pulled out of the cellar, took me to the municipal premises and let me go when everything was over, after the shooting. He managed to save nine more people who had the task of burying the dead. The fact that he had helped the Serbs and anti-fascists caused him problems, they began to threaten him, so he fled to Slavonski Brod | author = Savo Bojcic, the only living witness of the massacre | source = Novosti | width = | align = right }} In addition to the victims, some managed to save many Serbs from Voćin and its surroundings. The Croat gendarme sergeant Luke Mustafić managed to save the lives of 10 Serbs during the massacre.[3] AftermathOn the following day, Ustashas transported Serb corpses to a mass grave that was excavated east of Voćin, along the Voćinka river. The most significant consequence of this crime was strengthening of the partisan movement in the area of Voćin and Podravska Slatina, exactly the opposite effect of what NDH's authorities tried to achieve.[4] Although during 1941 and early 1942 there were not many local residents in favor of active resistance, due to increasing existential threat, a large number of Serbs from the surrounding villages joined the partisan units.[4] A memorial to the victims of this massacre was erected in 2007.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Sjećanje na 350 nedužnih žrtava ustaškog terora |url=https://www.virovitica.net/sjecanje-na-350-neduznih-zrtava-ustaskog-terora/20767/ |date=January 15, 2013 |website=Virovitica.net }} {{DEFAULTSORT:Vocin Massacre}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://jadovno.com/arhiva/eng-lat-493/articles/komemoracija-pobijenim-srbima-vocinskog-kraja-lat.html |title=Komemoracija pobijenim srbima voćinskog kraja |publisher=Association of Descendants and Supporters of Victims of Complex of Death Camps NDH, Gospić-Jadovno-Pag 1941. |date=January 14, 2013}} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Sjećanje na pokolj nevinih u Slavoniji |url=http://arhiva.portalnovosti.com/2012/01/pokrajine-91/ |website=Novosti |publisher=Serb National Council |date=January 21, 2012}} 4. ^1 {{cite journal|journal=Scrinia Slavonica|url=http://hrcak.srce.hr/77887|first=Filip|last=Škiljan|title=Stradanje Srba, Židova i Roma u virovitičkom i slatinskom kraju tijekom 1941. i početkom 1942. godine|publisher=Hrvatski institut za povijest - Podružnica za povijest Slavonije, Srijema i Baranje|place=Slavonski Brod|volume= X, 1|year=2010|ref=harv|page=360-362|issn=1848-9109}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.ekspres.net/drustvo/ustaske-pretnje-srbima-u-vocinu-proci-cete-kao-43 |title=USTAŠKE PRETNJE SRBIMA U VOĆINU: Proći ćete kao ’43. |publisher=Ekspres |date=January 3, 2017 |first=Antonije |last=Kovačević}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://mondo.rs/a47117/Info/Ex-Yu/Bomba-na-spomen-obelezju-zrtvama-u-Vocinu.html |title=Bomba na spomen-obeležju žrtvama u Voćinu |date=January 14, 2007 |publisher=mondo}} 8 : Mass murder in 1942|Massacres in the Independent State of Croatia|Independent State of Croatia|Massacres in Yugoslavia|Massacres of Serbs|January 1942 events|1942 in Yugoslavia|Yugoslavia in World War II |
