It is an erect perennial herb with a few to many stems and grows to a height of {{convert|50|cm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}. The leaves are mostly linear with a few scattered teeth on the sides and the flowers are blue, bell-shaped with five lobes and arranged in cymes. This bluebell is widespread and common, occurring in all Australian mainland states and territories. DescriptionWahlenbergia capillaris is a perennial herb with a thickened taproot and a few to many thin, erect, branched stems that grows to a height of about {{convert|50|cm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}}. The leaves are sometimes arranged up to stems and sometimes only near the base of the plant. The leaves are linear, {{convert|4-50|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|0.5-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide and often have a few teeth arranged along the edge. The flowers are blue and arranged in cymes, each flower with five sepals joined at the base but with narrow triangular lobes {{convert|2-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long. The petals are joined at the base to form a narrow bell-shaped tube {{convert|4-9|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long with elliptic to egg-shaped lobes {{convert|6-15|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2.5-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. The style is {{convert|4.5-9.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} with three lobes on its end. Flowering mainly occurs between October and March and the capsule is oval or cone-shaped, {{convert|4-9|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1.5-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingThe tufted bluebell was first formally described in 1839 by George Loddiges who gave it the name Campanula capillaris and published the description in The Botanical Cabinet.[5][6] In 1839, George Don changed the name to Wahlenbergia capillaris.[7] Roger Carolin rejected the name Campanula capillaris because Loddiges' description was inadequate, and in 1965 Carolin gave the species the name Wahlenbergia communis.[2][8] In 2016, Ian Turner resurrected Loddiges' name and the change has been accepted by the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families and the Australian Plant Census.[1][2][9] The specific epithet (capillaris) is a Latin word meaning "of hair".[10]Distribution and habitatWahlenbergia capillaris is widespread in all mainland states and territories of Australia and is especially common in disturbed sites and along roadsides.[2][3][11]References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 357342 | Wahlenbergia capillaris}} {{Taxonbar|from1=41776402|from2=Q15555167}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web |last1=Walsh |first1=Neville |title=Wahlenbergia capillaris |url=https://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/dd2a47a6-0228-42e2-9930-73ceb9a1afd8 |publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria |accessdate=4 February 2019}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |last1=Smith |first1=Peter J. |title=Wahlenbergia communis |url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Wahlenbergia~communis |publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney |accessdate=4 February 2019}} 4. ^{{cite journal |last1=Smith |first1=Peter |title=A revision of the genus Wahlenbergia (Campanulaceae) in Australia |journal=Telopea |date=30 September 1992 |volume=5 |issue=1 |pages=132–135 |doi=10.7751/telopea19924963}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Campanula capillaris|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/533525|publisher=APNI|accessdate=4 February 2019}} 6. ^{{cite book |last1=Loddiges |first1=George |title=The Botanical Cabinet (Volume 15) |date=1828 |location=London |page=t. 1406 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/91650#page/13/mode/1up |accessdate=4 February 2019}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Wahlenbergia capillaris|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/9143657|publisher=APNI|accessdate=4 February 2019}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Wahlenbergia communis|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/484816|publisher=APNI|accessdate=4 February 2019}} 9. ^{{cite web|title=Wahlenbergia capillaris|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/51269899|publisher=APNI|accessdate=4 February 2019}} 10. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =183}} 11. ^{{FloraBase|name=Wahlenbergia capillaris|id=48829}} 4 : Wahlenbergia|Flora of Australia|Flora of New Guinea|Plants described in 1839 |
