Courtney studied in Derry and Edinburgh. CareerCourtney became a nurse in Derry. Courtney joined the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), was elected to Derry City Council in 1985, and served as Mayor of Derry in 1993. Courtney retired from nursing in 1997.[1] When SDLP leader John Hume resigned from the Northern Ireland Assembly, effective from December 2000, Courtney was co-opted as his replacement, representing Foyle.[2] Courtney was keen to contest the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly election for the party, but did not gain the SDLP's nomination. As a result, she resigned from the party in April 2003 and instead sat as an independent.[3] Courtney stood as an independent in the election,[4] but took only 802 votes and was not elected.[5] References1. ^Biography – Annie Courtney MLA, Northern Ireland Assembly {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929102912/http://www.niassembly.gov.uk/members/biogs/acourtney.htm |date=September 29, 2007 }} {{s-start}}{{s-civ}}{{succession box|title=Mayor of Derry|years=1993–94|before=William Hay|after=James Guy}}{{s-par|ni/ass}}{{succession box2. ^"Courtney takes up Hume's assembly seat", The Irish Times, 11 December 2000 3. ^"Annie Courtney resigns from SDLP {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070928084011/http://www.4ni.co.uk/northern_ireland_news.asp?id=15005 |date=September 28, 2007 }}", 4NI.co.uk, 1 April 2003 4. ^"Courtney stands as independent", BBC News 5. ^Foyle 2003, Northern Ireland Elections | title = MLA for Foyle | before = John Hume | after = Mary Bradley | years = 2000–2003 }}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Courtney, Annie}} 10 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Place of birth missing (living people)|Living people|Mayors of places in Northern Ireland|Social Democratic and Labour Party MLAs|Northern Ireland MLAs 1998–2003|Independent politicians in Northern Ireland|Female members of the Northern Ireland Assembly|Women mayors of places in Northern Ireland|Politicians from Derry (city) |
