It consists of two groups of buildings connected by Dark Lane, known as Bitchfield and Lower Bitchfield, collectively called Bitchfield. The village is situated approximately {{convert|6|mi|km|0}} south-east from Grantham, and on the B1176 road, running east and parallel to the A1.[1] The village is part of the civil parish of Bitchfield and Bassingthorpe .[2] It had been a civil parish in its own right until 1931.[3] Bitchfield is mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Billesfelt".[4] Both Bitchfield and Lower Bitchfield are sometimes described as "shrunken" rather than deserted medieval villages. There are signs that both were more extensive at one time.[4][5] In Bitchfield there is an earthwork known as Camp Field.[6] The ecclesiastical parish covers just Bitchfield. It is part of the North Beltisloe Group of parishes in the Deanery of Beltisloe, in the Diocese of Lincoln.[7] The parish church, in Lower Bitchfield, is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. From 2006 to 2011 the incumbent was Rev Richard Ireson.[8] The church is substantially unaltered, with features of both Norman and Perpendicular architecture.[9] References1. ^{{cite map |publisher=OSGB |title=Grantham Bottesford & Colsterworth |url=http://leisure.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/products/paper-maps/paper-maps-ordnance-survey-great-britain/paper-maps-ordnance-survey-great-britain-os-explorer-map/grantham/pid-9780319238332 |edition=3 |year=2006 |cartography= |scale=1:25000 |series= |page=247 |section= |inset= |accessdate= |isbn=978-0-319-23833-2 |id= |ref=SK985285 }} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/BitchfieldBassingthorpeandWestby/|title=Civil Parish details}} 3. ^{{cite web|publisher=GB Historical GIS / University of Portsmouth |title=Bitchfield CP/AP through time ; Census tables with data for the Parish-level Unit |work= A Vision of Britain through Time. |url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10398599 |accessdate=9 September 2013}} 4. ^1 {{PastScape|mnumber=325432|mname=Early settlement at Bitchfield|accessdate=2 April 2010}} 5. ^{{PastScape|mnumber=1036263|mname=Early settlement at Lower Bitchfield|accessdate=2 April 2010}} 6. ^Cox, J.
