It is part of the civil parish of Campton and Chicksands (population 1,699)[1] with the nearby Chicksands. It is about {{convert|9|mi}} south of Bedford, and is about {{convert|9|mi}} north-west from Letchworth and sits on a tributary of the River Ivel.[2] It is just to the west of Shefford. The 13th century Church of All Saints is in the centre of the village.[3] Campton is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The entry reads: Chambeltone: Ralph de Lanquetot from Walter Giffard; Fulbert from Willian d'Eu; Thurstan.[4] The name Campton is derived from a British stream name similar to the name Camel in Cornwall.[5] Chicksands is to the north of the village, and consists almost entirely of the wooded Chicksands Priory estate. It was used as an American military base until 1995[6] and returned to the British military. If was first reopened as the Defence Intelligence and Security Centre (DISC) in 1997,[7] which in turn became the Joint Intelligence Training Group (JITG) in 2015.[8]For local government purposes it forms part of Central Bedfordshire Council and is within the Mid Bedfordshire parliamentary constituency, whose MP is currently Nadine Dorries of the Conservative Party.[9] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Detect browser settings|url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=5&b=11121601&c=campton+and+chicksands&d=16&e=13&g=6402748&i=1001x1003x1004&o=362&m=0&r=1&s=1452370707141&enc=1&dsFamilyId=2491|website=www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk|accessdate=9 January 2016}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Campton & Chicksands - Home Page|url=http://www.camptonandchicksands.org.uk/|website=www.camptonandchicksands.org.uk|accessdate=9 January 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS - 1113722 |url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1113722|website=historicengland.org.uk|accessdate=9 January 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Campton Domesday Book|url=http://opendomesday.org/place/TL1238/campton/|website=opendomesday.org|accessdate=9 January 2016}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Ekwall|first1=Eilert|title=The concise Oxford dictionary of English place-names|date=1960|publisher=Clarendon Press|location=Oxford|isbn=0-19-869103-3|pages=84-85|edition=4}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=School to Fight Merger|url=http://www.biggleswadetoday.co.uk/|accessdate=9 January 2016|work=Biggleswade Chronicle|date=29 July 1994}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Defence Intelligence and Security Centre annual report and accounts to March 2005|url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/229000/0319.pdf|website=gov.uk|accessdate=1 August 2017|page=4|format=PDF|date=July 2005}} 8. ^{{cite journal|url=https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/469631/15-07-275_Sanctuary_Magazine__FINAL_lowres_.pdf|title=Bedfordshire - Joint Intelligence Training Group Chicksands|journal=Sanctuary|date=2015|issue=44|page=74|issn=0959-4132}} 9. ^{{cite web|title=Nadine Dorries MP|url=http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/commons/nadine-dorries/1481|website=UK Parliament|accessdate=9 January 2016}} External links
