The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) is an indicator of general cattle markets in Australia.

The EYCI index is calculated based on a seven-day rolling average expressed in cents per kilogram carcase (or dressed) weight (¢/kg cwt); and is sourced from sale data from 26 saleyards in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.[1]

It is produced daily by MLA's National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS). It includes

  • vealer
  • yearling
  • heifers
  • steers

Only cattle meeting the following criteria are included:

  • grade score C2 or C3,
  • 200 kg+ liveweight

It includes cattle purchased for:

  • slaughter,
  • restocking or
  • lotfeeding;

The EYCI is also used as the base for the MLA/SFE Meat & Livestock Australia/Sydney futures exchange Cattle Futures contract.
