It was established in the year 1997. The Odisha government issued a gazette notification for award of the university status to GIET Gunupur in December 2018. Managing Trust Prof. (Dr.) Satya Prakash Panda ( President) and Prof. ( Dr.) Chandra Dhwaj Panda ( Vice-President) founded a trust called Vidya Bharathi Education Trust which is a non-governmental organization, established in the year 1996. The Trust works in the area of Education & Literacy, towards the promotion of modern and technical education in the state of Odisha .
