It is found at depths of {{convert|160|-|345|m|abbr=on}} in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide.[1] This is one of the smallest of the rattails, growing to no more than {{convert|13|cm|abbr=on}} in length. It is a slender fish with a large mouth, with rows of very small teeth, positioned in the underside of the skull. There is a short, thin chin barbel. It is more strikingly marked than most rattails, with bold black streaks on the head and black and silver barring over most of the body. There is a long bioluminescent organ with two lenses underneath the rear end of the body.[2] References1. ^{{cite journal | author = Schwarzhans W | year = 2014 | title = Head and otolith morphology of the genera Hymenocephalus, Hymenogadus and Spicomacrurus (Macrouridae), with the description of three new species | url = | journal = Zootaxa | volume = 3888 | issue = 1| pages = 1–73 | doi=10.11646/zootaxa.3888.1.1}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q3752441}}{{Gadiformes-stub}}2. ^{{cite journal|author=Chiou, M.L.|author2=Shao, K.T.|author3=Iwamoto, T.|last-author-amp=yes |year=2004 |title=A new species, Caelorinchus sheni, and 19 new records of grenadiers (Pisces: Gadiformes: Macrouridae) from Taiwan |journal=Zoological Studies |volume=43 |issue=1 |pages=35–50 |url=http://www.sinica.edu.tw/zool/zoolstud/43.1/35.pdf |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20051105094014/http://www.sinica.edu.tw/zool/zoolstud/43.1/35.pdf |archivedate=2005-11-05 |df= }} 2 : Macrouridae|Fish described in 1920 |
